I'm working from home today and alone. I'm in my bedroom, no office furniture yet, and the bedroom is facing the backyard/fence.

I'm working away and watching a movie(Enchanted, which was such a good movie) at same time (I know I'm supposed to be working!) Something catches my eye on the left where the windows are. I saw this dude climbing over and my instincts quickly kicked in, I had my sidekick and a baseball bat ready. I didn't know what to do until I saw his t-shirt that said "CenterPoint - Meter Reader" I was relieved but I still stood guard to make sure he gets the job done.

The reason why I freaked out because we just moved here to a new neighborhood and I'm not familiar with this area yet. Only way to access my backyard if you go through the gate door and garage so he had went next door to climb over the fence into my backyard.

Gosh, I was freaked out but this got me thinking, what if it was a thief and I have nothing to defend myself? Scary thought.

Have you had your place broken in when you're home?

You need a gun! J/K i'm not a fan of guns. I'm home alone ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL day alone during the week with my daughter and i've gotten used to it. If someone ever breaks in I have a bat signed by lance berkman and I'm not afraid to die using to. :) Seriously, get an alarm system and get friendly with your neighbors.

Haven't had mine broken into, but my car has been plenty of times. I am armed and ready just in case.

    P.S.

Get an aluminum baseball bat, Lady_Di. They are very light and pack a hell of a wallop. I keep the one my daughter had, from when she was in softball and still in grade school (short length), under my bed. Sure, I have "other measures" I can take, but I like having "an equalizer" handy for hand to hand combat. You should be able to find a used one pretty cheap.

Yeah, we were gonna get an alarm system eventually but I think I might just go ahead and have it installed already.

Oh the one I have is aluminum so I'm ahead of you but still, it's not a really good method if I want to defend myself against a dude who weighs more than me. I'm not sure how strong I am, I do weight training so I might be surprised.

Lol, Kam, was that you??? :p

I've got no backable data, but I've heard that the most effective deterrent to an invader entering your home (or immediately running away) is the simple sound of a shotgun being cocked.

I bet someone could make a mint if they had some sort of device that made this sound.

About 10 years ago, I lived in a house on White Oak, in the Heights. The night of the day we moved in someone came in while we were asleep. My min-pin (little dog - big bark) got going on then and they ran out the front door as I ran into the living room. That was the only time we had any problem at that house. I've kept a bat close since then.

I've had several police officers say this is true, and that a 12 gauge is the best home defense weapon anyways. Takes away the "aiming" part of shooting someone I guess.

Our house was broken into a long long time ago ... 23 years I think. We weren't home at the time and I wasn't born so there you have it :)

You could try one of these to deter any intruders
