Jason Kidd is a lover not a scorer. Elaine Wynn, who is married to casino owner Steve Wynn, was promised by Kidd that he would give her his Olympic hardware if the US won gold. Apparently, he's a man of his word. From the Las Vegas Review: "'Last summer, we stayed at the Wynn for (what seemed like) a lifetime, close to three weeks,' Kidd said. 'We met at a banquet, we got to talking, and she really understands the game. I told her I'd make a deal with her, that if we won the gold medal, I'd give it to her. She thought I was kidding. But I told her I had one already, and the way they treated us at the Wynn, it was the least I could do.'" And here I was thinking Misty and Jason were going to melt their gold medals into some nice accent jewelry. Oh well.

Man, I remember thinking how nice it would be for Kidd to give his medal to coach K since he has a Sydney one.

No, nobody on the coaching staff gets a gold medal. Medals are reserved for the athletes only. Otherwise, you would have to give out medals to every coach of every medalist in every event. It would be ridiculous.

what? I thought all the medals were made out of the metals they are known as. I thought I read it somewhere for one of the olympics about trying to get enough of one type or something.


oh and it sucks that the coaching staff doesnt get any medals. I think for team sports like soccer, basketball, baseball where the coach is an active part of the game itself (calling timeouts, interacting with refs, subs, plays etc..) that he/she should be awarded a medal as well.

sports like swimming, diving other sports where the coach helps train and motivate should get something, bracelet or something, but not a medal since they do not directly effect the competition itself as its happening.

 

I agree with you here.

Yobod does have a point about needing medals for every coach of every medal-winning athlete.

But for team sports such as basketball and football, where the coaching staff's gameplan plays a substantial part in a team's performance as much as the athletes do, it just seems ludicrous for the coach to not get a medal.

After all, coaches win rings in the league when they win the championship, and in football (soccer to you Americans), the manager gets a winner's medal too.

 

There is of course another way of looking at this!

He souldn't have made such a foolhardy statement to Mrs. Winn in the first place . However I am glad that his word is his bond!
