I moving to New York City in about 6-9 months. i have only been there once so i dont know too much about different areas.

So what i was thinking with my price range it would be best for me to live in the bronx or queens. i would like to be in at least a semi safe area. but overall i think ill be ok on that front. and im content and fine with something very very small.

im not sure if i answered enough questions but if i could find a decent deal in one of those areas. what would i be looking at. I really have no idea just throwing it out there $750-$1200???

overall i think i would prefer a decent building with decent quality of apt. and decent safe area. but im ok with as small as apt as possible. and i came make some concessions with the others.

thanks for any help i am truly lost here.

    sorry soo long :(

You can try craigslist and get general idea of prices on there.

However despite what some people think, the deals on craigslist aren't that great.

You can try parts of queens and brooklyn that are relatively close to the city as well. Astoria, Woodside, Williamsburg?

    Where will you be working?

Also you should try finding an apartment without paying a broker fee. These fees can cost you anywhere from one-month's(of a year's) rent, to two-months rent. Keep in mind, finding an apartment without a broker will be extremely difficult so you should start looking early.

if you dont mind sharing an apartment, Riverdale is an excellent place in the bronx, i would rate it higher than downtown manhattan in terms of safety. however, it is a bit pricy, but like i said, if you are willing to share an apartment, 800 can get you a single bedroom.

My brother currently lives in a nice part of Queens and pays around $1200.00 a month for a 350-400 square foot apt. He's had enough of the NYC scene though and after 5 years he's now moving back to H-Town on the 6th of September. LonghornFan is teh happy.

You can find some decent places in Jersey City (which is right across the water from Manhattan) for that price range. JC is also very close. Its literally about 1-2 stops via the PATH train into either mid town Manhattan or the World Trade Center. (It takes you about 7-10 minutes to reach Manhattan from either Jersey City or Hoboken)

If staying in NJ you will want to find a place that is connected the PATH rail system. These run 24/7 so will always be able to return back home from Manhattan after a night of partying, instead of having to pay the taxi fees.

Your other route if you don't want to room with others (or live in Jersey) will be to find a place in Queens. I really like Astoria, Queens. Someone mentioned Williamsburg as well. This is the hipster capital of the world, but not much going on after a few blocks.

It all depends on what type of area you want to live in. If you want a very clean and safe environment I would go with areas of Jersey like Newport area or Grove Street of Jersey City and Hoboken as well. If you want to live in a very busy, alot dirtier area go with Queens or Brooklyn.

FYI: I just moved to NYC about 3 months ago, so I'm familiar with the search.

Only problem is that Flushing is hella far from anything going on in the city. Its the last stop on the 7 train. I once took the commute to Flushing and it took me more than an hour just by rail, not including the waiting time to get on the train. So one might need to allocate one and a half hours for their travel time.

Where do you work? When I first moved to NYC, the commute time was certainly a big part of the calculation in terms of housing.

You won't be getting it back.. Its a fee for their services.

Flushing is a great place. I moved here after living in the city and although the commute can be a pain but you get used to it. Rent is about half here and living expenses as well so that more than makes up for a little inconvenience. Also getting to manhattan from flushing is around 40 mins that u can be twiddling on ur blackberry(you get reception on the 7). If you take the 7 express it'll take you 20 or 25 mins.
