Considering that he was the only Asian player with significant talent that was playing in the NBA , it is hard to believe he was not a project.
We're talking about Dwight Howard because he is a benchmark ( a comparison or standard because he is touted as one of the best centers.) Numbers and statistics don't lie. they are objective facts. I didn't know there were so many apologists here of Dwight Howard and Kevin Garnett. Fans apologizing for their weakness and accentuating their strengths. tsk.tsk.
This is, quite possibly, the most inane response yet in this long and drawn out thread... Why bring race into this pacmania? Why? What point are you trying to make? And really, you think Garnett is a mediocre defender the previous year? When 3/4 of his roster consisted of scrubs? Also, just for your info, the Celts do not use Garnett in a zone to cover up his "defensive deficiency". If you bother to watch any team outside of the Rox in the past few years at all, you'll realise that Garnett has always been a one-man zone around or at the top of the key, even for the Timberwolves, because he is so incredibly long that he can disrupt passes around the key and then slide back down to help around the low blocks.
Who the hell ever claimed that Kevin Garnett was a mediocre player the previous year? He was voted to 2nd team All-Defense in 06/07, for pete's sake. And Garnett has gotten his fair share of criticism throughout his career, even in the playoffs last year. I don't know where you were going with that example.
Yao is a mediocre defender because the league hates Asians? Seriously? Kevin Garnett is one of the most multifaceted defenders in all of basketball. He can even guard point guards from time to time. You are just not equipped to have a discussion on Yao's abilities and inabilities. Since stats never lie. Here are the stats of a 22 year old Dwight Howard and a 22 year old Yao Ming. You tell me which player you'd rather have. Dwight Howard - 20.7 pts/game, 14.2 reb/game, 59.9 FG%, 1.3 assists/game, 2.1 blocks/game, led league in rebounding, 1 playoff victory, 1 gold medal Yao Ming - 13.5 pts/game, 8.2 reb/game, 49.8 FG% 1.7 assists/game, 1.8 blocks/game BTW, what "accomplishments" have I dissed? Did Yao lead the league in rebounding or blocked shots or scoring? Did he win the MVP or the Defensive Player of the Year? Did he finish all defensive first or second team? The guy has never won a playoff series and hasn't even played a full season in THREE YEARS. What accomplishments does he have besides getting voted into the All-Star game? He "shut down" Eddy Curry, the noted All-Star from the vaunted New York Knicks? Seriously? This is why people say Yao Ming is overrated.
