It seems you can add one more to the recent QB bust list: Matt Leinart. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3551359 Beaten out by 58-year-old Kurt Warner to be the starter in Arizona. Takes more than college dominance to make a stud in the NFL.
In fairness, Warner did lead the NFL in TD passes after he took over full-time for Leinart last year (according to someone at my draft...I have no idea if that's true. ).
Exactly. Leinart isn't that bad looking. But Warner is a solid QB. Kudos to management for allowing Warner to play.
Yeah, Warner is solid. But Leinart does look pretty bad -- his QB rating last year (61.8) was lower than David Carr ever had in Houston, and his performance last night (4-for-12, 3 INT) came out to a solid 2.8. Nine times out of 10, I'm sure he would've done better, though. With that said, I hope Warner takes this and has success -- if he could lead them to the playoffs, that would be one hell of a story.
This understates what Roethlisberger did. He started his career 15-0, I believe. And before him, it wasn't a good team. The team was 1-1 when he got his first start. And they were sub-0.500 the previous year (which got them a top 15 pick to draft him with). The only team he lost to his first year was the Patriots, who won the Superbowl. And in that first year, he had a QB rating of 98. He certainly wasn't throwing for 300 yards a game or anything like that, but he made the big plays when needed.
He looked lost in the elimination playoff game. But ya, perhaps I did understate it. I don't know though. That situation was perfect. The defense was stout and the run game was consistent.
Can't say that I'm surprised about Leinart. He never struck me as good NFL caliber QB material. People like him and David Carr prove that college passing stats don't mean a thing in the NFL.
How could you forget the 24 to 6 win over PITTSBURGH? At Heinz Field, no less. Set a record for fewest total yards gained (47) by a winning team in NFL history. I think they only had 6 yards rushing. The defense scored all three touchdowns (Aaron Glenn with two interceptions for TD's and Kenny Wright with a fumble return). The DC area is contaminated with hordes of Stiller fan douches and I believe I laughed in every single one of their faces that day.
and the irony behind this leinart was supposed to be the number one pick in smith's draft if he had come out of school. instead he cost himself about $20MM. and just a little more trivia, reggie bush and alex smith played high school ball together
Some here might argue that as a #7 draft pick, you're NOT expected to excel as much as a #1 pick and therefore NOT a bust...
