Where was Yao interviewed? The lighting in the back kinda looks like a, uh, house of ill repute. :)

the hottest topic in China right now is who will be the next head coach for the CNT?

    I think it will be:

    Jeff Van Gundy.

He would be perfect coach for the CNT. The reasons are:

    1) He does not have a professional club to coach, so he will be likely to consider the offer

    2) China will be willing to spend $$$ for a good coach ( reasons are:

    * china has dominated in this Olympics except for ball sports such as Basketball. Given the Chinese mentality, they want to earn 'face' and show the world they can be great in everything
    * given the growing popularity of basketball globally, and the rumoured introduction of an NBA affiliated CBA league, this is the best time to sour in the world standings for Chinese basketball
    * China has learned their mistake in their Soccer program by not willing to spend $$$ on Gus Hiddink and hence hired another Dutch man with considerable less money, but the result? LOSS after LOSS, after LOSS

    3) JVG understands Yao and how to get the most out of them, he also loves Yao like a son, plus Yao will only listen to JVG, at times during this olympics, Yao had been annoyed by Jonas for his tactics. If Jonas stays, I can see POTENTIAL tension rising

    4) Bringing in JVG, Yao will be gurranteed to play for one more olympics

    5) JVG is perfect for the Chinese team strategy by implementing mental toughness (refer to the 1999 8th seeded Knicks that went all the way to the finals) and most importantly, being the BEST defensive strategist, I think the CNT have some potential in being a GREAT defensive team.

    6) JVG's coaching style (tough, workaholic, you-work-hard-you-play) and mentality fits in perfectly with the Chinese norm. Us Chinese were brought up acknowledging not to back down from pain and work harder each day

    7) JVG enjoyed his time in Beijing and Shanghai during the two NBA exhibition games where the Rockets plays the Sac Kings

JVG was a fan favourite during his time with the Rockets

    9) Most importantly, by bringing on board JVG, YAO WILL PLAY FOR CNT AGAIN GURRANTEED (sorry for repeating myself)

But I could be wrong, maybe the officials are feeling stingy again and not willing to spend the money.

However, no matter what happens in the future, Jonas Kaslaukas has laid down the ground work for the CNT, we will see the result in a couple of years. I think we're giving him less credit than he deserves!
This is just what I think. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong. What do you guys think?

    My prediction for CNT future:

    4th place in 2012
    Silver in 2016
    after that.....gold???

    no

    1) JVG would have to relocate his family + daughter to China
    2) that would mean JVG would not coach in the NBA for next 5 years

    also

    3) China is not close to the medal rounds, they're extremely iffy on advancing past pool play with Yao and unlikely without Yao
    4) A coach will not take China over the hump they need to develop their guard play, forwards, physicality, movement on offense and a new center for 2112 + after Yao
    5) China "dominated" only in crappy sports and 1 or 2 prestige sports like men's gymnastics. China has a long way to go to compete in sports other nations well... compete in

the only reason JVG would indeed go to coach China is

    a) money (and that would have to be > head coach + commentator money)

you have to be able to distinguish between what the Chinese want and what JVG actually wants. it's a pressure filled gig burdened with vast overexpectations with very little possibility of upside (China advancing and medalling in 2112) who'd actually want that job?

there's a huge difference between Van Gundy who's still a wanted property in the NBA and someone like Del Harris who will likely never run a team again in the league

completely different situation. with team china for a long time he was the only option, with the rockets he had tmac. i guess thats his way of saying that team china has improved.

more importantly i hope its his way of saying that team china will be fine without him

    To Bloop,

I agree it is not likely that JVG would accept the offer.

I'm just saying he is the most SUITABLE coach for the CNT.

Ofcourse, everything has to come down to $$$, like I said, China has to be willing to invest in big amounts of $$$ to improve its basketball program

Getting a good coach obviously would not improve CNT overnight. I'm just saying it is crucial as it sets the groundwork, or even overachieve.

Who in the world would have thought the Socceroos (Australia Soccer) would have advance into the final 16 of World Cup even on the day Gus Hiddink signed on as the head coach. He turned the team around pretty much overnight (again, you can say that, soccer is different to basketball)

CNT needs to improve every aspects of its program. But it has to START with a world class coach. This is why I think JVG is the MOST SUITABLE coach, but if China is willing to spend millions on him, like you said, more than he is earning, then he might consider it.

From a basketball point of view, JVG is by far the best candidate to take China to the next level regardless of whether he accepts of rejects the offer

No offence, as much as I LOVE the Rockets, but I have to reveal the truth:

YAO would choose CNT over the Rockets on ANY GIVEN DAY!

Even if it jeapodizes his whole professional career.

If he'd have to sabotage a new whole new multimillion dollar dollar in order just to play ONE game for the CNT when he's needed he'll drop the contract and fly back to join the team.

This is nothing but the TRUTH. Even though I want him to concentrate on the Rockets as well.

You've hardly revealed anything but an opinion. He has on a couple of occasions spoken how he would like to take a break from the CNT. Yao has come back from injury early for both the Rockets and the CNT. Let's not pretend you know some kind of truth to kind of sacrifice he would do over the other. I hope the CNT doesn't pressure him, because if they don't, I think he would take a break from them.

They need to worry more about who will be the PLAYERS for the next Olympics.

JVG isn't going to make their guards any less crappy. And who has China produced over the past years after Yao? Yi is stinking it up. Sun Ye looks like a long shot as an NBA player... and has no handles regardless to solve China's biggest problem. Their overall talent is still WAY behind the top teams in the Olympics today.

I don't think JVG is a coach that develops young players or team. CNT is a developing or young team that need a coach that helps in developing them.

The best thing Yao have said was not coming back to China and he will treasure being part of the China's team to represent to Beijing Olympics. Does that mean that Yao won't play for the chinese basketball team? Man i sure hope so!

Starts out on right channel only then moves to left channel. Seriously that is a rookie mistake not recording on both channels....

It happens far too often....especially on Chron.com......

lol you really think JVG would want to coach the chinese, esp. their guards? JVG is really intolerable of guys who don't know the fundamentals of basketball and chinese basketball players still lack that.

and sure, JVG would simply pound the ball to yao on every single play and his workload on the chinese team would be that much more.

but seriously, no way in hell JVG would coach the chinese.
