You misread. I said their score should reflect a fall. I didnt say thier execution score should be zero. Really though, 0.8 is not that much for a failed landing. Heck, a meter step is what 0.5??
The dude scored a 16.2 something out of 17 with the knee landing! The Chinese girl scored a 15.0 something out of 16.5 with the same landing (along with some mistakes). She won third because of her a high first vaulting score. The scoring looks consistent to me, at least in vaulting!
It is nice to see what Olympics brings out in everyone. Yes Olympics is for peace and unity of the human race. This is not the first Olympics where home court played a big role in the final standing nor it will be last. Just check out the medal count of every host nation for the last 50 years. Everyone knows that's part of the game but now China is getting some of the benefits everyone is raising a big fuss, oh I know, they are the big evil commie nation.
But they shouldn't necessarily be discounted. USA swept the men's 100m hurdles. Every one of the men would have won a gold medal had they not been running against other Americans yet we only get credit for 1 gold. Chinese men came in 1st and 2nd in the rings and US women came in 1st and 2nd in the all around. Discounting medals other than gold marginalizes these accomplishments when countries place multiple athletes in the top spots.
if you think sacramone did one flip and that's it, perhaps you should watch again. the chinese girl did a harder vault, and completely botched it. it's hard to say you completed a flip when you are laying flat on your stomach at the end. she didn't even come close to executing 50% of her routine. how any system can give you a bronze for that i don't know. i can do a 360, between the legs dunk if that's the case. sure, the ball won't even get net high when i try the actual jam and i might fall down, but damned if i didn't spin and move the ball around.
you guys are forgetting both of the Chinese girl's vault has starting 6.5 difficulty that's max 16.5 per vault. she did almost perfect on the first one to get 16+ score with some minor deduction. 2nd vault she got 15.0X with 0.8 deduction for landing, and other deductions for other stuff. average was about 15.5 while Alicia did 2 vaults with difficulty in the 5.5 range. that's 2 freaking full points lower before the competition even started. why the hell would she win?
don't remember. last time, i went to a tigers and yankees game. spent most of the time eatting and drinking. wasn't really paying attention to time.
how about you just do the best vault you can while, you know, actually landing on your feet. presumably the better gymnasts would be able to do harder vaults while actually landing on their feet. no perfectly executed, olympic level vault (one done by the all-around gold winner) should get the same score as any other olympic-level vault where you fall flat on your face.
why? if the system rewards people who do harder vaults. the goal is to win the medal and get paid. why do easier stuff knowing someone else can mess up and still win with harder routines?
Err ... no, there can be only 1 winner in each competitive sport. These sports are individual sports, the teams may represent different countries, but when they compete, they compete as individuals. Well, it depends on how you define accomplishments. If you define accomplishments by how many competitions you win, then only gold medals matter.
Color me not impressed with NBC's evening coverage of the events. They are stuck on just a couple of the major events. I would like to see some of the more obscure events. Plus, the first hour recaps stuff they showed the night before. You can't tell me that there aren't other competitions they could have shown.
People complaining about the women's vault final forget that it wasn't just her knees touching. If it was that and only that, then the score was probably justified, based on her degree of difficulty and higher starting value. But what seems to be touched upon by Tim Dagget is that the judges failed to take deductions on the other mistakes in her vault. If they had, she would have scored lower and Sacramone would have taken bronze. I'll also add the judging discrepancies aren't just relegated to the US team; there have been a number of head scratches both in these Olympics and in ones past. It's a flawed system and it probably always will be...just like figure skating. And of the softball and baseball thing. Completely flawed arguments by the IOC.
