Spanish Bombs is the only good song The Clash ever came up with? Well, then it's pretty obvious that the only songs you've heard from The Clash are Spanish Bombs, Should I Stay or Should I Go, and Rock the Casbah. They do have a few other songs besides those three. But hey, to each his own.

I'd like to nominate Radiohead and System of a Down, out of the bands that I listen to regularly. Radiohead is more of an obvious and well known choice though. So I will shine the spotlight on System of a Down. For example SOAD's latest double album has some great lyrical songs. Like "Dreaming", "Tentative", "Holy Mountains", "Soldier Side", "Sad Statue", "B.Y.O.B.", and so many others.

Almost all of their songs and lyrics are in the political realm.

Back in the days of old (but well after knights were bold) there was a band called 'Ass Ponys' and they had really good lyrics.
The quiet one, the one named Steven
Listens to the voice of reason
They miss him at the kitchen
Where he's given daily bread

Another one, the one named Harry
Vegetable or visionary
Said he had a dream with Steven
Flying overhead

He watched him until he lost him in the sun
He must be having some kind of fun

A thousand miles, a world away
A woman starts another day
She drinks her mud and draws a tub
And waits for it to fill

A box arrives with nothing in it
Setting off her head a spinnin'
It goes round and round and round
Until it all begins to spill

Before she knows it another day is done
She must be having some kind of fun

There are thirteen headless turtles
Hanging on a line
Their severed heads would snap a stick
And break your finger pretty quick
The blood is draining from their necks
And out into the grass
The flies are buzzing all around
A hatchet sticking in the ground
And it's summer here

The river looks like chocolate milk
It's foaming at the banks
The snakes come out to sun themselves
You think you've died and gone to hell
I found one in the yard
So I gave it to the dog
She barked and got it by the head
And flung it 'round till it was dead
And it's summer here

Out behind the barber shop
The barber's burning hair
He lights it laughing to himself
He knows you can't escape the smell
The smoke is rising from the pile
And out into the town
It stings your eyes and burns your nose
And makes it's way all through your clothes
And it's summer here
The music is very good as well. During the brief A&R douchebag feeding frenzy in the 90s over "alt-country" bands, Ass Ponys got a recording contract and put out an excellent album - "The Known Universe." But people (apparently) didn't really want any "alt-country" and the Ass Ponys were one of the few bands whose sound could lay genuine claim to a label like that.

So, go find it in the bargain bin, or at half.com, or somewhere. It really is a great album that pretty much everyone missed.
I'm gonna walk around the yard
Until I find a hill of ants
Take a magnifying glass
Heat 'em up and watch 'em dance

And I only hurt because I think of you
And I only kill because God tells me to

I drove by your house today
But I didn't dare to stop
And I felt just like an ant
As I rode around the block
You forgot to mention the amazingly deep song Kill Rock and Roll about how a pair of pet rabbits were run over. ;)
