The sequel is already in talks, but it looks like it might be even more interesting, it seems they really wanted Seth to do a sequel for Superbad, which he didnt really want to do, but now talks are in place to doing a crossover sequel, joining superbad and pineapple express. The article states it got its sources from MTV, who knows how valid it is, but that would be interesting, 2 directors each directing half of the movie, combine all the actors from both movies, I read another article where Franco was talking more about how Seth would work with him being in both movies, and since one character was a cop they could just kill him off. I think it could work, it would be pretty good as long as the directors are on the same page. It seems anything Seth touches turns to gold so Ide watch it if he made it. http://www.movie-moron.com/?p=720 "Co-writer and star Seth Rogen has said the door is very much open to a Pineapple Express 2, where it was closed to a Superbad sequel. “[Pineapple Express] is not a precious coming-of-age story like Superbad, it’s a weed action-movie and if it did well, and they gave us like $50 million dollars (as opposed to the $26M we got for this one) we could benefit from that.” And when James Franco was asked recently how he saw the sequel happening, he claimed the studio has actually been discussing doing it as a crossover movie… …with Superbad. In other words, like Marvel’s Avengers or Kevin Smith’s movies, the comic characters from Judd Apatow’s films would all inhabit the same universe. “Even before Superbad came out, I think the studio was trying to get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to write a sequel, but they really didn’t want to,” said Franco. “So, an answer to that was to do a Superbad/Pineapple Express crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie.” Sounds like madness …or does it? Franco himself believes it should start with his character selling the kids a substance, then it would all kick off from there. And as Rogen plays characters in both films, Franco thinks one of them would have to be “killed off”. Would you like to see a Pineapple Express 2, and what do you think of combining it with the world of Superbad? Sources: MTV, Ace Showbiz" A couple other links discussing it. http://theplaylist.blogspot.com/2008/08/pineapple-express-2-could-mesh-apatow.html 'Pineapple Express 2' Could Mesh Apatow Worlds, Include 'Superbad' Gang? If they made a "Pineapple Express 2" or a "Superbad 2" for that matter would we see a Judd Apatow world crossover? Probably not, but actors like to talk wacky ideas when they're bored on press junkets and James Franco did exactly that. "Even before ‘Superbad’ came out, I think the studio was trying to get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to write a sequel, but they really didn’t want to write a sequel. I guess the kids would go to college or something like that [that was the studio's idea],” Franco told MTV News. “And so, an answer to that was to do a ‘Superbad’/'Pineapple Express’ crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie and somehow these characters get together, which doesn’t make sense at all, but could work.” How would this silly meta-ness work if it were to ever happen? “I could sell them [the characters from 'Superbad'] something, but I think we’d want some action, so you know, somehow the kids get in trouble somehow and we have to get them out of it,” Franco said. “And Seth plays characters in both movies, so somehow we’d have to kill one of them off.” Yeah, it's fun to talk and it's a fun "idea", but remember guys, sequels are gateway drugs to totally **** careers. http://www.slashfilm.com/2008/08/07/a-pineapple-express-superbad-crossover-movie/ At Comic Con, Judd Apatow joked about a possible Pineapple Express / Superbad crossover movie, where the paths of all the characters would cross. Everyone thought it was just a joke. Besides, Seth Rogen has expressed his disinterest in doing another Superbad, even though the movie studio has been clamoring for a college tale. This week our friends at MTV talked with Pineapple Express star James Franco, who told them it’s a real idea. But it gets even weirder. According to Franco, part of the idea for the “unprecedented crossover” is that it could be filmed by two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie. Even Franco admits that it “doesn’t make sense at all, but could work.” I’m not sure the Directors Guild of America would allow it. The idea of the crossover became hot in Hollywood when Nick Fury showed up in Iron Man and Tony Stark made an appearance in The Incredible Hulk. But truth is, Kevin Smith created the ultimate crossover movie years ago with Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, which included the characters from every Kevin Smith film at that time. And since Smith, like Apatow, uses the same crew on many films, some of the actors appeared as a couple different characters. For instance, Jason Lee appeared as both Brodie Bruce from Mallrats and Banky Edwards from Chasing Amy. And with a Pineapple Express / Superbad crossover, thee would be a huge conflict as Seth Rogen appears in both films in major roles. Franco’s idea is to kill one of the characters off, soyou don’t have to deal with it. I think the funnier thing would to be having Seth Rogen, as the cop from Superbad, chasing Seth Rogen as the stoner from Pineapple, down the street. LOL. Yeah, I doubt this will ever happen. I think I’d actually rather see Seth, Evan and Fogell go to college. MTV - http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/08/0...ossible-superbad-pineapple-express-crossover/ James Franco Teases A Possible ‘Superbad’/'Pineapple Express’ Crossover Published by Shawn Adler on Wednesday, August 6, 2008 at 5:04 pm. It’s the buzzword of 2008: Cross-pollination. And it’s all the rage these days thanks to Marvel’s ambitious slate, which already included Nick Fury showing up in “Iron Man” and Tony Stark showing up in “The Incredible Hulk.” So if comics can get away with it, why not Judd Apatow? We’re actually not joking. Combining Apatow’s comedies isn’t just a good idea, it’s an idea whose time very well may come soon, “Pineapple Express” star James Franco told MTV News. When asked about the possibility of a “Pineapple Express” sequel, Franco said that not only has it been discussed, it’s about to get some real McLovin. “Even before ‘Superbad’ came out, I think the studio was trying to get [Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg] to write a sequel, but they really didn’t want to write a sequel. I guess the kids would go to college or something like that [that was the studio's idea],” Franco said. “And so, an answer to that was to do a ‘Superbad’/'Pineapple Express’ crossover, an unprecedented crossover movie with two directors, Greg Motolla and David Gordon Green, each directing half of the movie and somehow these characters get together, which doesn’t make sense at all, but could work.” Rogen himself has stated that he’d be interested in a “Pineapple” sequel. But how would he combine the two universes? Just ask Franco. “I could sell them [the characters from 'Superbad'] something, but I think we’d want some action, so you know, somehow the kids get in trouble somehow and we have to get them out of it,” Franco mused. “And Seth plays characters in both movies, so somehow we’d have to kill one of them off.” And Franco’s character Saul? The drug dealing, pot smoking, hippie based at least in part on Brad Pitt’s performance in “True Romance”? “The thing about Saul is that I don’t really think he goes anywhere,” Franco laughed. “That’s his tragedy.”
Seth was on Howard Stern this morning and said they came up with the idea for this movie by just sitting on the couch, completely stoned, then one of them said "What would we do if someone tried to come in and murder us right now." Awesome interview. Dude seems like a genuine down to earth guy.
I don't understand. What? Rogen plays 2 different people or they wanna make the guy the same person? Someone throw me a bone here I am confused. He doesn't wanna do SB2 cuz he would be a secondary character. PE2 opp comes along and hes all over it. Mmm hmm.
Thats like the Kevin Smith movies where Ben Affleck winds up portraying 3 different characters, including himself.
I saw it last night night. While I'm a huge fan of Apatow movies and Rogan and everyone associated with them, I didn't think this one was very funny at all. I hope I don't feel the same way about Tropic Thunder.
i saw this yesterday and while the funny moments were def funny, like it made me laugh out loud. but it was 20-30 min tooooooo long. i was getting bored there at the end. luckily it was only $4 for the ticket.
Definitely entertaining and funny, but I wouldnt say its as funny as some of the other posters here. Step Brothers made me laugh a little more.
ridiculous but funny <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/WU_93M5N008&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/WU_93M5N008&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
it was good, and it definitely had some really funny moments, but this is in no way a "must see" movie.
Went and saw this yesterday. Pretty damn funny and I'm by NO MEANS a fan of the dumbass stoner comedy movies that are USUALLY put out these days. However, this was a stoner comedy that actually had some plot and at times wasn't really even a stoner comedy. The jokes weren't corny and that was a welcome relief . 7.5/10
franco's performance carries the film, esp. some the faces he makes when they are fighting. i love how his character is either completely on, or completely off. he's either way too stoned to make any sense, or he's so focused/scared/determined that he can't pull of what he's trying to do. favorite parts: Spoiler "two guys and a lady!? that's like a massacre." "yeah well, you're going to go off to college and blow a bunch of guys and start listening to 'godspeed you black emperor' and become a lesbian." "i'm going to wait exactly one more minute, and i don't care, then i'm going to start eating from my plate and you can call it rude, you can call it whatever you want. in fact, i'm going to go eat it in the living room and check my email." "today is a very special day. it's my cats birthday" "i don't see a cat" "yeah well that's cause he died three months ago. now who's the funny guy?" it was so definitely over the top with the violence it couldn't possibly be taken 'seriously'. i really liked how it makes fun of itself so to speak. the fighting, the conveniently located automatic weapons and the 'guy-who-never-dies' aspect were so improbable, they had to be mocking other action comedies. that, and the fact that the gang wars are all over NOTHING BUT WEED (as opposed to more realistic gang fighting over harder drugs like heroin or cocaine), i think altogether the film is intended to be rogan's parody statement on people's perception of weed as a 'hard drug.'
I found it pretty entertaining. Always a treat to see Craig Robinson on film. "I look like a Hamburglar" Awesome.
My sentiments exactly. Love the Apatow movies but I thought this was just ... lame. Didn't laugh much at all -- couple parts. Though I was exhausted when I saw this movie and this girl behind me had the most annoyingly loud voice/laugh and talked during the movie -- that may have contributed.
I thought it was okay, but I didn't like it nearly as much as other Apatow/Rogen movies. I regret I didn't get high before going to see it, I'm sure I would have liked it more....
