Study: Troops Deployed Abroad Gave Six Times More To Obama Than To McCain

According to an analysis of campaign contributions by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, Democrat Barack Obama has received nearly six times as much money from troops deployed overseas at the time of their contributions than has Republican John McCain, and the fiercely anti-war Ron Paul, though he suspended his campaign for the Republican nomination months ago, has received more than four times McCain's haul.

Despite McCain's status as a decorated veteran and a historically Republican bent among the military, members of the armed services overall -- whether stationed overseas or at home -- are also favoring Obama with their campaign contributions in 2008, by a $55,000 margin. Although 59 percent of federal contributions by military personnel has gone to Republicans this cycle, of money from the military to the presumed presidential nominees, 57 percent has gone to Obama.

I guess McCains comments about staying 100 years in Iraq didn't go over well with the troops.

Ironic isn't it, McCain claims he supports our troops, but our troops are supporting Obama.

Careful...Obama may "evaluate" the situation and change his mind...But at least his intentions are good.

Exactly what I was thinking how can a POW not endorse this Bill. He want's troops to have at least 6-8 years in service before they see any benefits?

Well the troops know who is on their side--not the chickenhawks and neo-cons who cheer the wars, but send other folks' children.

McCain was thinking like a third generation admiral (top manager) that he was raised to be. Supposedly McCain was about to be appointed an admiral when he decided to run for the Senate.

Did any of you guys actually look at the numbers? They only counted 248 contributions and of those #s, 142 went to Republicans, 140 went to Democrats. The Republican contributions were split among 5 people as opposed to the Democrats 2 people. This may have been relevent a year ago when trying to figure out which candidate each the troops support for their respective political party, but this doesn't mean ANYTHING because it is sooooo outdated since we're now down to the 2 presumptive noominees.

Troops donated substantially to Ron Paul and Barack Obama. Obama and Paul each got well more than McCain, Romney, Huckabee, and Thompson combined. Now, what's the policy interest that Paul and Obama have in common, and that McCain/Romney/Huckabee/Thompson were all on the other side of?

Your right about the Ron Paul/Obama, but the title of the post/article makes it sound as if Right NOW, the troops are supporting Obama 6 to 1 over McCain. It is misleading because the data is so old that it is before the presumptive nominees were...well...presumptive and the Republican contributions were split in 5 directions as oppoed to just 2 for the Democrats. I do find it very interesting that Obama garned almost 23 times more support than Hillary. But again, the #'s are so low that its difficult to have a real critical judgement from the article.
