http://www.myfoxhouston.com/myfox/p...n=2&locale=EN-US&layoutCode=TSTY&pageId=6.1.1 HOUSTON -- While the Houston Rockets were finally able to officially announce Thursday the multi-player trade that brought forward Ron Artest from Sacramento to Houston, the Rockets now appear to be closing in on getting a contract done with second round pick Joey Dorsey, the forward from Memphis. Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey told FOX 26 Sports from China that he has exchanged contract proposals with Dorsey's agent and feels good about getting him signed. Dorsey's agent, Lance Young, is clearly on the same page with Morey. Young told FOX Thursday he was heading to China next week where he planned to meet with Morey and attempt to get a contract done with Houston before the Olympic Games are over. Meanwhile Morey said he still plans to meet with free agent center Dikembe Mutombo and his agent after the Olympics in an effort to bring Mutombo back to the Rockets. He said he had nothing new to report on forward Carl Landry, the restricted free agent. Earlier this week Landry's agent, Buddy Baker, told FOX there was no meaningful dialogue happening between the two sides. Last week FOX 26 reported the two sides had exchanged contract proposals for the first time but that nothing was imminent. Also the Rockets have hired Arturas Karnishovas from the NBA league office to handle the team's international scouting. He replaces Gianluca Pascucci.
Both good and bad IMO. I still think the Rockets have the upper hand in the Landry negotiations so far. I'm interested in seeing how long Dorsey's contract will be for. I hope DM won't narrow things down to the vet's minimum for Deke and thus let him go.
landry has 3 options: 1) Take the qualifying offer and go unrestricted next season 2) Take what ever Morey is willing to give him in a long term deal 3) Go play Over seas. If his agent thinks he is so healthy he should just take option One and be done with it.
After they sign Dorsey and Mutombo the money left over goes to Landry which is more than enough imo. I don't see Dorsey and Mutombo taking even half of the MLE.
Bubby Baker will not get his way with the Rockets. This guy needs to go back to school(Basketball Agent 101)
Baker is just doing his job, i.e. maximize the interests of his client, and of course, himself. What's so wrong with that?
Buddy Baker is trying to make a name for himself, he just doesn't have any leverage in this situation.
Baker isn't doing anything wrong. The problem is landry's a rfa so it's easy to play hardball with him. Other teams could make him an offer, but it would be a waste of their time cause rockets will match. Grizzlies made an offer to smith and the hawks matched right away. After weeks of a stalemate, the hawks can thank the grizzlies for negotiating for them. No team wants to do the rockets work for them, which kind of screws landry.
this news on Dorsey is definately a surprise... don't they have to dip into their MLE money to sign him? Morey must be confident no team is gonna offer the full MLE for Landry
Actually, the fact that Landry's a RFA is why Baker is wrong. What's the point of this stalemate if Rockets can effectively "veto" whatever Baker does by matching qualifying offers? What Baker is doing would only make sense if Landry was a UFA. So far, it seems like no other teams have tried to give Landry an offer sheet, which indicates his knee has problems.
Yeah, kind of stinks for Dorsey's sake that a thread dedicated to our attempts to signing him immediately shifts to our frustrations over the Landry standoff. I saw "[Chron] Rockets Close In on....." in the headline before I entered the GARM and was excited to hopefully hear some good news about Landry. Instead, I obviously discovered it was merely Dorsey we are talking about.
im sure morey didn't plan on signing dorsey before landry. i understand both sides posturing to get the best possible outcome for themselves, but at the end of the day morey holds the key to the door. if i were DM i'd sign dorsey and deke, then tell baker he has until a determined deadline to either provide medical info on the knee, or accept a fair offer considering the risk of the knee, before the rockets move on. there may no be good bigs left in the FA pool, but steve's ending $3M plus luther head should be able to net a decent role player at the 4.
Trying to make the Rocket's organization look evil for wanting to make sure their investment healthy? He's a complete tool.
