i saw them at ozzfest in '02... that was a great show Ozzy Osbourne, System of a Down, Rob Zombie, P.O.D., Adema, Black Label Society, Tommy Lee Down, Hatebreed, Meshuggah, SOiL, Ill Niño, Glassjaw, The Used, Otep, Lostprophets, Chevelle, Mushroomhead, Seether there were a few others but look at that lineup, those are all fairly large bands now.
I like to go with what Surfguy said. There is an agelimit for bands to make brutal songs that work. When your 20 and broke and angry you can hear it in your music. But when your 40 or 50 and rich as hell, you have lost that. For most bands the anger goes away, and it becomes to be heard in your music. The pushing to hard thing sounds artificial. Metallica should have quite after "Justice for all" or latest after the rockalbum......
Ive never seen Down live before, but I have Down II: Bustle in Your Hedgerow. Its pretty good. With Anselmo's history of trashing Metallica, I am a little surprised to see them touring together. Why dont we go ahead and throw Megadeth in there while were at it...

"The Day That Never Comes" hits radio tomorrow at 2pm according to FMQB music. The 10 second clips Metallica has put up on its website sound great. This album is going to rock. http://www.metallica.com/index.asp?item=601104
Great song with a lot of riffs. This is the real Metallica comeback. mms://wm.elektra.com/metallica/metallica_com/2008/de/Track04.asf
Not quite sure how I feel about it yet. I mean, this is easily the best thing they have put out since 1991. I just still feel like the snare still tries to overpower everything. Great riffs though. Had a very "One" kind of format to it. Slow first half, jamming second half. If this is the "Most Downbeat" song on the record, should be pretty solid then.
I liked Cyanide when I heard it on the radio the other day. Not so much the live video though. The first 2/3rds of The Day That Never Comes reminds me of Bleeding Me (which f'n rocks) from Load. I dig it.
Im liking it more with each listen. Just wish the production was a little cleaner and the snare was more of a backbone to the music instead of trying to be lead. Baby steps, though. The last three minutes completely own though.
The song rocks, but the unfortunate thing is that Metallica is never going to have "epics" again like they used to have solely due to the changes in James' voice. It has lost that edge, that gruffness that demanded your attention back in the glory days. He isn't really much of a singer, pitch-wise, so he needed that fire and energy in his voice to make his vocals unique. It's not distracting the way they sound now, but I just can't muster up that "epic" feeling like the band has been talking up this album to be ("Eight epics and a song" or whatever they said).
I do agree with your sentiment Raven. I have to say though, the streaming version doesn't do the song justice. The cd quality version i just got sounds great. Kiss of death but based on 1 track i think this is will be their most complete work since the Black album. I'm looking forward to hearing the rest.
At work, so I havent been able to get a CD quality version yet. Still streaming off of Metallica.com. If its really better, then thats great! I have had the song playing non-stop since 1pm
The sound is really in your face. Rick Rubin loves to have the loudest sounding records and this is no exception. Thankfully i didn't hear any clipping like his disasters with the RHCP albums.
wow just downloaded it from itunes and it's a whole f#$kload better than i thought it could be... got me pretty excited about the album. i don't really buy the "sounds like old metallica is back" talk because as raven said, i just don't think that's possible. however it's better than anything on the pile of crap that was st.anger but i actually like most of load and reload and honestly "bleeding me" is a better song than this one.
I love the solo and the last couple of minutes, but I thought it could of been more epic like, Enter Sandman. But still, A LOT better than St. Anger.
Me likes it! I definitely had some flashbacks to the early music coming through. I'll pick this one up. That ***** was rocking. I haven't been able to digest it much, though. It's going to take some more listens.
