vespio on s. congress for bomb-ass italian. ranch 616 on 7th and nueces - fantastic eclectic restaurant la traviatta on congress between 2nd and 3rd - the spaghetti bolognese is out of this world south congress cafe on - well - south congress... agreed on the brunch, but make reservations rounder pizza on w. 6th moonshine bar and grill is real good uchi on s. lamar - supposedly the best sushi in the state (i haven't been) but pretty damn pricey mean-eyed cat on w. 5th - really cool johnny cash themed bar betsy's bar off of w. 6th is a favorite of mine draughthouse on 42nd (i think) and medical... really cool bar with a great beer selection and they let you "tailgate" so to speak check and see if anyone cool s playing at the parish, or stubb's, or la zona rosa, or emo's, or the backyard, or hole in the wall, etc. j. black's/the ranch on w. 6th is cool, but a little trendy. opal divine's free house on w. 6th for some scotch
it is, the chef at uchi went on iron chef. if he's going to austin for a special occasion then he should try it.
I have to agree on the Threadgill's suggestion. Love that place (original locale). GingerMan, cool, anyone know if liberty lunch is still in existence? Apparently I'm making my way back to North Austin soon, so thanks for the thread and the good suggestions... now, can anyone tell me a good place to get a good job there?
Uchi was WAY WAY WAY overpriced for what you get. Yes it was magnificent sushi, but not even close to worth it, and I love sushi. DD
Dimension Fund Advisors (DFA) UTIMCO (UT Investment Mgmt Co) Texas Teacher's Retirement Fund Whole Foods Corporate Office Heliovolt (photovoltaic solar) Stay far away from Dell and AMD.
Why? I'd like a job, too.. But yeah, I LOVE the salt lick, rudy's is good, fogo de chao is good (but pricey and can't eat that much meat that often..) agree with the post about kirbey, didn't like it when i went there i'll check some of the other places out
Why? Well, if you like or thing that - Answering to 15 different bosses is a good thing - you think Bill Lumberg is misunderstood and a hero of management - Don't mind working a schedule that changes every week like you were working at Target - Enjoy being treated like cattle...and more disposable than cattle then Dell or AMD is the place for you. They are the ultimate last resort for jobs in Austin. The only difference is that one is in south Austin and the other is north.
Kruetz is in Lockhart, not Luling. Kruetz and Smitty's, both in Lockhart - consistently make the top 5 of any BBQ list in Texas. Nothing in Austin does. Mann's on 183 near Burnett was in the recent Texas Monthly Top BBQ in Texas list as was Lambert's as an honorable mention IIRC, but nothing in Austin is near the top. If you want good sauce, and experience, go to the Salt Lick. If you want great BBQ (sans sauce) go to Lockhart. Rudy's? C'mon now, it's like the McDonalds of BBQ. I disagree about Kerbey Lane. At least at the original location (on Kerbey Lane), I still dig the place. I prefer Juan in a Million though for the eggs with queso (damn that's good). Mean Eye'd Cat was a great suggestion. Gingerman - meh, I'd rather go to the Crown and Anchor. Try the Poodle Dog Lounge, the Dry Creek Saloon on Mt Bonnell (which you can also schedule with a trip to the top of Mt Bonnell for the good view), or Deep Eddy's Cabaret (all dive bars). Also, C Hunt's is a sweet little icehouse on N. Burnett. Definitely check out Dale Watson while you're in town. He's usually at the Continental Club on Monday's (IIRC), the Belmont on Tuesday's (nice outdoor seating for drinks), and I think the Broken Spoke on Wednesdays.
Hula Hut has good burgers.. That pancake place that has good queso is good, I forget the name.. Driskill food is lackluster so don’t bother going there.. Alamo Draft house puts on Master Pancake theater I.E. (Mystery Science Theater) and it’s good for a few laughs.. The Velveeta Room is really good for local comedy and it' only 2 dollars to get in and the drinks are cheap too.. (Highly recommend) Don’t forget to get a cigar at Bobalus..
good luck.....i did the trifecta and made it though 5.5 to be perfectly honest....next day was not so fun...dont try taking the chaser pill before which mightve added to my misery....report back and let me know if make it alive!
I got through 4 just fine on July 4th weekend and felt ready to do 2 more at the South location... but my buddies wanted to hit up 4th street and my attempt got thwarted. This time we're all on the same page to complete the Trudy's Trifecta either tomorrow night or Saturday. Will report back.
Damn you. Now I'm going to have to wake up early so I can go get a Don Juan before work in the morning! Why'd you have to bring up Juans!
I'll toss one more out there - Cisco's in East Austin is pretty legit for Mexican food. http://austin.citysearch.com/profile/10207711/austin_tx/cisco_s_restaurant_bakery_bar.html 1511 E Sixth St Austin, TX 78702-3305 Phone: (512) 478-2420
Mission accomplished. 6 Mexican Martinis yesterday - 2 at each location. Plus a 7th mexican martini at the (new to me) South Congress Cafe - which is supposed to be an upscale Trudy's. I ended with the my eyes rolling to the back of my head at the bar after downing the 7th one - my buddies had to take me back to the hotel b/c I couldn't stand or talk any more. But after years and years of wanting - the Trudy's Trifiecta has been accomplished!
pangea on colorado (i think) between 4th and 5th was BUMPING last night... reserved table, bottle service, loudest DJ ever.... damn!
I've been moving all day so believe me when I tell you I was excited to go to Juan in a Million for the Don Juan this morning after a rough night of booze pain. It's over on East Cesar Chavez about a mile down on the left. They took a picture with Martha Stewart! It's hanging right in the lobby! Coolest thing I've ever seen.
[Borat] Very nice![/Borat] Did you drink the house or get a better tequila? Typically I'll go middle of the road since I think using premium tequila in a mexican martini is a waste.
Premium Tequila to start... first 3... then house after that - when my taste buds and overall senses began to get really, really, numb!
