Truly one of the greatest opening ceremonies I've ever seen. The spectacular fireworks, the 15,000 performers, the set pieces, the insanely huge lcd screen on the floor of the bird's nest. It was grand, epic, lavish. Seemed like a perfect way to welcome the world to modern China.

It'll be interesting to see what London does fours from now since they're aiming for a much more simplistic approach.

On another note, I freaked a little when the last torchbearer was raised to the top of the Olympic stadium and it looked like one of the cables broke off and he tilted downward.

Having been at three Olympic Games and have watched twelve others. I can assure that this opening ceremony was by far the most entertaining. It was executed to almost perfection and the inovation and use of high tech was truly that of a 21st cent. show. It was so entertaining in its originality that I know the London 2012 organizers are racking their brains as if it will ever be possible to surpass such a show.
However the movement of the teams need to be speeded up, for their sake and ours as viewers. They could return to the past and have them march in with almost military precission. ( They get into the stadium in about one third of the time. At present they are sauntering in and have little order, almost as though they were celebrating the closing ceremony.) . If this is not what society wants then only have upto three athletes from each country, their officials limited also to three and the flag bearer, in this way the presentation of participating countries could be done with minimal stress on the athletes and the ones present at the stadium and viewing at home. :p

it was good but like some have mentioned, it was long, which is somewhat expected.

best ever? if that's what you want to think, then fine. It's historic given the circumstance, that's for sure.

Coolest thing was the dude's in light suits.

Personally, I thought the running around the building was a little too Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, but it something different.

did anyone else think that the guy was going to fall after he was raised up to the wall and he let out some slack to make himself hang at an angle? Oh, when the fire wasnt visible while he was being raised...I thought it had gone out.

And did anyone else thing the American athlete outfits looked a little too Judge Smails?[IMG]

I was amazed by it. The juxtaposition of the new and the old was great. The 500ft long LED 'scroll' was amazing as it allowed them great flexibility to show all sorts of cool stuff against the people on top. I think it was just amazing.

Edit: Damn, I said amazing a lot of times.

But for most of the athletes that come to the games, this is their shining moment as the majority do not win a medal. We as viewers can always just change the channel or turn the tv off; the athletes themselves can choose not to attend (some actually do not if they have events the next day). But I think it's important to let them have their moment; and to savor it.

I was only able to catch the highlights on nbc's website, but I thought it was one of the most amazing visual displays I've ever seen on such a grand scale. Not to mention the level of human precision. It was jaw dropping for me. Loved it.

it is amazing what you can do with 10,000 people who's souls have been crushed by the communist regime. :D

I always remember my Uncle talking to me about the national parades they have in North Korea. He said "Imagine how scared people have to be to be that precise".

Thats all I kept thinking last night...I kept trying to look for the performers that would be killed because they stuffed up!

The drums, light suits, the moving boxes and tai chi was very visually impressive.

I was kind of meh on the excess symbolism, it was a little too much, but overall, that was $300 million spent well. Fireworks were incredible and the bird's nest is an amazing work of engineering. But all that work for a few days... it will never be used to its full capabilities ever again.

I think it has less to do with the communist regime, and more to do with not wanting to be remembered as "the guy /girl screwed up on our first Olympic".

No, it was about being killed.

Actually I think something like 9,000 of the performers were from the Chinese army.

I'm not gonna bother whining about the commercials, thats just a fact of life on tv stations....they gotta make their money too.

I thought the ceremony itself was fantastic, very visually impressive.

It ran way too long, but it is what it is....thats a helluva lot of athletes involved and they all deserve their moments in the spotlight.

The only thing that irritated me was that Manu got screen time and Luis didnt.
I also thought Yao was mighty laid back considering this is the biggest moment ever for him up till now.

finally you got something right as they were from the Army. and it's because they are passionate and disciplined. but I guess you have never come to China and met any of us in person. I am sorry we live here in a different world from where you uncle was. saying what you said as if it were a fact is ignorant at best.

It's the year 2008, you might want to watch the news or crack a book. The Cold War is over, there's this currency called the Euro, and Desert Storm is a thing of the past (oh wait, maybe not that part).

The ceremonies were amazing. I know the march of athletes is long and boring, but I know if I qualified I'd want it to last as long as possible. The ending was phenomenal.
