    More and More I wonder what is the purpose of the 'News' programs
    on the TV

    I've come to the conclusion it is the following. . . in this order:

    1. To entertain
    2. Manipulate Opinion
    3. To scare the ***** out of you
    4. Sell Product
    5. To inform?

    Watching the maddness every night one would be scared to go outside their door.

    Basically
    I just have little use or faith in the News to inform me anymore
    it is all spin . . all crap

    It really depends on what level you are talking about. On the local level the alternate purposes you talk about are more prominent because they think of themselves in ratings dependant terms like sitcoms and other TV shows. As you head to national and international as well as away from headline driven news, you find less and less BS.

    There are still some news people who believe they have a noble duty to inform the polis and try and act that way. It is just difficult to find them unless you look for them, since the shysters are so much better at screaming and getting your attention.

    Agreed with all of the poll options. I'd say probably just to depress you as well with the nightly Murder, Rape, and Sports report. lol.

    Its to entertain. Almost always. They are going to tell you what you want to hear, wether it is wrapped up as news, investigative journalism or whatever.

    To the media companies, the purpose is to earn a profit (as with any business). This is best performed by playing on people's fear. Fear of natural disaster. Fear of disease. Fear of family safety. Fear of crime. Fear fear fear. It sells product.

    To non-profit media organizations, the purpose of the news is to broadcast information relevant to the lives of the public without bias. This never happens due to political, commercial and business influence.

    The general public THINKS that the purpose of news is to inform the public of information relevant to their own lives

    ...but, in truth, we, the people of the United States, care more about who won American Idol than we do about wars, laws, politics, business, globalization, etc.

    I don't watch the news any more. I hate the news.

    I don't think I have watched a news telecast.......mmmm since 9/11.

    especially local news, all that is......is a body count.
