With a 2 1/2 YO at home, I do a lot of reading aloud. This has gotten me to remembering my reading experience as a kid-- reading on my own that is.

My favorite series were the Encyclopedia Brown books. Did anyone else read those? Those were such vivid stories. I so badly wanted to be like EB.

How about you? Any perennial favorites out there from yesteryear?

I was a big fan of Hank the Cowdog series, plus I really liked Gary Paulsen's books.

In Kindergarten, I used to always check out the "Lyle the Crocodile" books... Then I moved up to heavy-hitters Louis Sachar, Judy Blume, and Michael Crichton. ;)

The "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" series was awesome, too.

I was an absolutely voracious reader as a child. I read anything that I could get my hands on -- which is why I had the sh*t scared out of me when I was eight because I read my parents' copy of "The Amityville Horror."

As far as more age-appropriate books, one of my alltime favorites was "Harriet the Spy." I think that led to my love of snooping. It makes me a great researcher, but a terrible houseguest.

The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe and Charlotte's Web

Those were probably my two favorite books as a kid.

I read anything and everything when I was a kid - I think I read through our whole small town school library. I agree with Master Baiter and Pole - the Narnia series and Watership Down were some of the most amazing books I read as a kid.

I read a whole lot of The Three Investigators series. Also, everything Llyod Alexander wrote. Then, when I was a little older, sci-fi. I'll only read classics now; I don't have time for crap. I missed out on some really good children's literature as a child (damn you mama! ;) ): Narnia series, Tolkien, Curious George....

As a kid I was also a voracious reader. I started with Dr. Seuss and various Disney books at the youngest but I soon started reading books by Beverley Cleary and Judy Blume, and then C.S. Lewis. The Screwtape Letters was/is one of my favorites as a kid.

As I got older, I got heavily into mythology and I devoured any writings I could find about various cultures' mythological traditions. About the same time I got into the fantasy genre of Tolkien and similar authors like Margaret Weiss and Tracy Hickman, Anne McCaffrey, David Eddings, etc. To this day, fantasy and mythology are amongst my absolute favorite things to read.

I love to read. I love biographies as well. I love anything/anybody with a good story to tell. I can't wait for Ozzy to write a book. I enjoyed Motley Crue's The Dirt as well as anything I've read.
