I'm in a rent house and my satellite dish is mounted on the roof. Well, I had roof problems in the past so they put a new roof on top of the old one. What my landlord did not know is that invalidates any insurance coverage as they only allow one layer of roof. So, they are putting a new roof on and they took my satellite dish off. Only these roofers don't speak English and didn't appear to me that they are going to put it back on. The dish was professionally installed and the installer used a template to drill holes to mount the thing. I was trying to figure out if they were going to put it back on but the whole time they are speaking Spanish so I dunno what the hell they are doing? If they can take the damn thing off, then they can put it back where it was but it appears their content with just leaving it down. What should I do about this? Should I biyatch at my landlord and the roofing company? Or should I go home and try to poke through the shingle to find the holes and re-mount/re-point it. Since I'm not doing the roof job, I'm not sure I'm going to be able to pinpoint where the original holes were but they could of. Are today's roofing companies so naive that they can't put a dish back up if they must take one down for a roofing job? This is the damn 21st century...not the 1950s. How hard is it to figure out that a renter or homeowner might not be too pleased if you take down the dish and not re-mount it when your done? If there is anyone here in the roofing business, then please let me know how you approach such things? What do they typically do...just pull the dish off and set it on the ground for you to find later? This is pissing me off. FYI: The last roofers who put a new roof on the existing roof re-mounted the dish no problem. I guess I can still do it later if I have to only if I can find the original holes. How the hell am I going to find those if their covered by new shingle? That's why it's easier for the roofer to do it...so they know where to mark and re-mount the damn thing. DAMMIT
I wouldn't recommend making holes in your shingle without knowing where the holes are. As for the roofers, I'd be surprised if none of them actually spoke English. It probably makes their job a lot easier if they pretend like they don't. And finally, complain to your landlord and let him complain to the roofers.
Do you have an attic that you could go into to see where the holes are? I am not a roofer (nor do I profess to be), but couldn't you simply drill "up" from the attic?
Yes, let the landlord handle it. You could also have it remounted on the chimney, or use a ground mount and put it in the backyard. I have a friend that resells the Dish Network systems, I can ask him what you may want to do if you get desperate.
hmmm... did you expect these non-speaking roofers to put it back!?! Ha! If you try to install it yourself, you'll need a friend to help so you can point the dish and they can tell you what the signal is. I would just put it back in the general area and drill the holes thru the satellite mount. Make sure you have a clear view of the southern sky... and use caulk to seal around those holes. Any hell you would raise with the roofers will fall on deaf (and dumb) ears, any hell you raise with the landlord might raise your rent, unless he's on your side. Pro sat installation will probably set you back about $100 (rip off) Surf, I'm sure you can do this by yourself, you'll just need help. good luck
Nope, I've already decided....someone is going to have to die over this. Isn't that how the world works? You don't like something so you destroy it.
Why don't you find out who the roofing company was and call their office - someone is bound to speak english. Tell them to come back and install it. I would not recommend poking holes anywhere in the roof if you don't know exactly what you are doing - leak city!
When the calendar flipped to March, I bet you were thinking, "golly, I sure am glad that February is over"
I think my landlord is clueless. I'm not so sure this roof had to be replaced after all. She thought it was leaking and she asked me after the fact if it was leaking. I had to remind her they put on a new layer of shingles and it was like new. She's old and just doesn't seem to have a clue. She may have duped herself into putting a new roof on for no reason. It may be a fire hazard to have two layers of shingles but will it invalidate any insurance coverage? She didn't even know what I was talking about on the phone. She's telling me my roof is leaking and I live here...she doesn't. This is just making me more mad. I want these f*cking people to go away.
Good news...I think. I found one of them speaks semi-okay English and he said they had marked the holes and they would re-mount the dish. I asked about it earlier and they were shaking their heads "no". I guess they couldn't really understand me. These guys really work hard and I admire them for that. The sun went down....they didn't leave. They asked me for a plug for one of their lights and their still at it up there. Their not even taking breaks. If it were me, then I may be lounging with a beer in my hand and a smoke in the other . All the pounding is making me nausious, though, and I hope they finish soon. Surf
