During that time, New York was in the Freestyle/ House movement. Same with the West Coast. Think TKA, Cover Girls, Sa-Fire, Taylor Dayne, Expose and that was the New York Radio/Club scene in the late 80s/early 90s. Only the underground and gay clubs in NY were playing what we called Progressive/Industrial music.

That was the big difference about Houston. It was a great time for Houston radio when you had 93Q live from 6400, Power 104 live from the Ocean Club, Energy 96.5 live from Decadance all playing this type of early electronic music (before the Techno era). You simply did not hear that kind of music on radio in any other Top 10 Markets.

Yeah, we've discussed that before on here. My first exposure was actually at #s and it must have been '84 or '85 because I'm pretty sure I was a junior in highschool. Going dancing at Rich's and #s during that time are some of my fondest memories.

Here's an example of NY Club music in the 80s.
    TKA

    and Judy Torres

You tell me which is better? New York or Houston?

That's almost comical. The thing is if you check out some old mixtapes from say, the Ocean Club for example, you will also hear some of this style of music. But it was not nearly as big in Houston I guess (a good thing). The underground industrial style dance music that was big in Houston was much better in my opinion.

I knew when I saw your username awhile back that it was you from back in the day. Man I remember those days when the radio played good dance music. That's how I got into house dancing and bboying. I miss radio stations playing some good house. Oh well, that's why I got satellite radio.

I remember going to Numbers in the late 80's.
There's an 80's cover band here in the Twin Cities called "A Fixx of Seagulls".

    Here's my contribution.

Thats really saying something for Texas....Can't wait to tell these Cali people here how they were frontrunners for that.
    jk

Same here, was exposed to new wave by those same stations.
My music tastes at the time were pretty ordinary, what my parents and everyone else listened to. But new wave/synth-pop kinda enabled me to open up to ALL other kinds of music. New Order just sounded way different than Huey Lewis and LL Cool J.

I wasnt into industrial, freestyle, or whatever genre Soft Cell & Dead or Alive is, didnt realize how gay it was until later :D but I'll forever give them credit for expanding my music ear. Something Skynard fan and Zeppelin fan couldnt do

These two bands always come first to my mind when I think about Numbers and the industrial days.

All of this brings back a lot of memories. I bought all my music from the record store on Alabama in the 80's.

Those were fun times. It seems like the freinds I hung out with had a different club for every night. We would go to Energy on Friday nights, Numbers on Saterday night and there was this club somewhere in down town called power tools we went to and every Wednesday night there was a club off of San Jacinto called Mecca that had free beer upstairs as long as the keg lasted. Typical Saterday or Sunday mornings we would end up on Jamaica beech.

    Good times.

    Sorry...

I'm just saying it's not necessarily "weird" to me. It's just coincidence, really. The ecstasy thing could have (and would have) happened anywhere. As luck would have it Dallas and Houston is where it started. #s and Visions were some of the first clubs in Houston that catered to that scene. The DJs were into more of the new wave and "industrial" music, so that's what became the ecstasy music. One could have exposed us to any number of genres at that time and we would have loved it, I'm sure. We went to those clubs for the music and were "turned on" to ecstasy. I'm not sure there's a true cause-effect relationship, but I still listen to a lot of that music to this day.

I gotta get back to work. I think I'm starting to have a flashback...

Also...I feel I should contribute something.

Here's one the songs/videos that really got me going during the peak of the #s years:

Cabaret Voltaire - "Sensoria" w/ "Do Right" 12" Remix

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RkfzXq0tA3c&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RkfzXq0tA3c&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

    Enjoy.

Agreed! I would even pay you for copies if you have them. I still have some tapes from 93Q live at the clubs or when they would have like Tuesday night club hours and I still dig 'em.

    MC 900 foot Jesus
    _____

...and if someone remembers the name of the song -- the lyrics went something like: 'i'm alone in the twilight zone' i'd like to hear that again. It's not the crappy 2 Unlimited song, but a Houston specific (I think) kind of rap/ industrial song.
