I was at the gym here in NYC this morning, and when I came back to my locker, I realized someone had broken the lock and stolen cash out of my wallet. The person left all the state id's, credit cards, debit cards, and subway Metrocard, but only took the cash. I even had my social security card in there which was left back in the wallet. The only thing I think the thief might have stolen was some blank checks, but they weren't signed.

A fellow member at the gym, told me that me to be wary about social security card, because the thief might have written the number down.

I told the management at the gym and they were quite helpful, saying they would even reimburse me the cash that was missing.

The good part is there is a video camera right next to the locker, so when they are able to review the tape on Monday, they will be able to identify the thief.

Should I still be worried? Do I need to call my credit card companies and let them know of a possible breach, even though my credit cards remain in the wallet?

I already called my bank and let them know of the blank checks that might be missing, but they told me they can't freeze the checks unless they have an actual check number. (I don't remember the actual check number because I placed the check in there a few years ago). They told me to call Risk Management when the office opens on Monday.

Should I be still concerned about possible fraud? Do I need to call the Social Security Office or the Credit Agencies. (Note: my Social Security Card was left in the wallet) And how do I go about alerting the possible authorities about fraud?

    Thanks.

I think you need to file a police report. You could contact the three credit reporting agencies and ask for credit freeze??

Is it legal to have a video camera next to a locker?

Yea, I set up a fraud alert with the three credit agencies.

I was also kind of surprised when I saw the video cameras in the locker room. It was in the corner hidden with one of those mirror plates. I'll get to review the results of the camera tomorrow when the manager is in the gym.

Just seems kind of weird that someone who pays $75 for a monthly gym membership would go out of his way to steal someone's cash. Unless it was an employee.

What a nice thief. I would almost feel like sending him a thank-you card for not taking all the IDs and stuff.

Why would they take the time to write down the SS#?

It was a smash and grab. They didn't take the credit cards because they knew they could be tracked if they used them or that you would freeze them quickly.

You should also ask for the tape from the women's locker room in case the thief ran there to hide the money.

That is actually a great idea. If they are kind enough to provide the video for evidence, then please feel free to post it for us clutchfans to see. We may be able to help identify the thief!

I got wallet jacked when I was in NYC too, but I was only a kid and had nothing valuable in it.

I had 50 canadian dollars and only 10 US dollars in it haha.

I had tons of fake credit cards(the John Doe ones) and my high school ID and that's it. At the time, I didn't have a drivers license or anything. The thief was probably pissed off nothing useful was in it.
