In major pain and need some quick advice on what to do.... Half the toenail on the big toe is sticking upwards at a right angle to the toe right now.... Do I try to bend it back down or just try and clip it off or what? And should I put hydrogen peroxide or something on the open wound? Thx
Ewwwwwww. Peroxide the hell out of it and put a bandage around it. I wouldn't try to pull the nail off yet.
Clip it off (not the whole nail, just the broken part), disinfect it, and put a bandage of some sort on it. If you don't break it off, it will most likely fall off anyways...so you might as well get it over with in a cleaner and more controlled way.
That's why I said don't pull it off because it will just fall off. It will hurt if you pull it off. It won't if it falls off.
I just edited above. I didn't mean to pull the whole nail off, just clip the part that is already broken. He won't even feel it if it's bent like I think it is.
I still disagree. I woulld fingers caught between facemasks in football in high school. The fingernails would break and eventually fal off. I cut the first one off and it's jagged edges were annoying and would hook on everything, including the inside of a bandage. The second one I let it fall off natually and it was a lot better. Either way, it's not going to be fun.
ok i cut it off and the pain is down by ~70%.......i think b/c the pressure's relieved maybe......but as mentioned, there are those jagged edges now too
I did this with my toenail twice before. Just be careful for a couple weeks not to hook it on carpet, socks, or whatever. As soon as it grows out a bit you can trim it so it's less jagged.
Had the same thing happen to me a while back and I didn't know it had happened and played about 4 games with it like that. When I took off the shoe I noticed the blood. I just bent it back down and taped it up and let it basically heal it self and grow out.
I've lost big toenails before playing b-ball. You just have to wait until you can pull it out. It's a "pain", heh heh.
