If you want to understand who's driving the Artest chemistry "controversy" and why, this article pretty well illustrates it. It's 9 years old, on another topic, but all the dynamics are the same. Especially the part where the press keeps raising the question and making a fuss about the answers while pretending they're not driving the story. http://www.slate.com/id/33709/
'''''''''''''' “My game speaks for myself,” he said. “I’m one of the top thee or four two-way players in the game. I do love to play defense. I got scoring all around me now. I can just contribute.''''''''' I hope Ron isn't under the impression that he doesn't have to score anymore!... I don't want him passing off to Dorsey on the wing...
you're right, the media is driving all the concerns of artest, i mean it had nothing to do with his actual comments, the media drove this with their questions. he's really a swell guy. edit: the difference is we never really knew if bush used cocaine, and quite simply it was a non issue rather he did or didn't. we know artest is a knucklehead, we've seen it over and over and over again
Good article. And, I think it applies as far as the chemistry issues I keep seeing implied on ESPN. But, it doesn't apply to the broader issue of Artest being a complete knucklehead and timebomb -- which, like Bush's use of cocaine, isn't being directly asked. It would be funny to see a journalist with the balls to ask Artest, "Will you eventually do something crazy and irresponsible that will irreparably dash all the championship hopes of your teammates and fans?" Btw, how long before Artest starts surfing this board and fomenting a hatred for particular posters?
Is it the media's job to speculate or report or both? Football will start and all of this will reemerge in the playoffs if we are fortunate enough.
Artest appreciates ‘great’ talk with Yao http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/sports/5918737.html
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/sports/5918737.html Can anyone post this? my account can't post. It is a good news that Yao finally called Artest Artest appreciates ‘great’ talk with Yao
I'm not saying it's exactly the same. I'm saying that the press has an agenda and that it's going to push that agenda for the next 2 weeks, 2 months, and 2 years, no matter how many little old ladies Artest helps across the street. Guys like Yao should be aware of this and refuse to play the game. So should you and I.
everyone in the media has a point of view or editorial now. That is why the world takes a hit when guys like Russert, Murrow and Cronkite and their objectivity leave us......... and also why guys like Robert Novak will never get the attention Russert did when he moves on........Did you hear Novak has a brain tumor? He knows the source of it but he won't tell us.THATS WRONG.....oh well he's unpatriotic and a crony.
What!? Damnit...No... Now we can't trade the guy, their going to feel sorry for him. You see what I did there? Took you right out of context just like the GD media... Edit: didn't really get the unpatriotic crony reference, Steve Novak seems like a fine american.
I agree. I would point out though that I think Yao is rather naive about the whole media thing. From a sampling of article interviews written with Yao, it's clear that Yao is very frank when it comes to dealing with the media. There's little in the way of fearing misinterpretation when it comes to how open Yao has been historically. Perhaps this has something to do with the Chinese media. Perhaps its Yao's naivete. Perhaps its a combination of both. Bottom line is I've NEVER seen Yao even remotely shy from the media when the slightly more paranoid player has every reason to fear misinterpretation. And THIS coming from a guy where English was his second language! I think its commendable that Yao is as frank as he is. But then again, I also think with Ron Ron in the picture, he's going to have to be that much more careful when addressing the media. Best to keep all comments direct and in the locker room imho. Moreover - conspiracy theories surrounding the media is a huge NO NO in China. It's known that the gov't controls the media. But the media is all there is for news. Yao's more worldly in his access to the U.S. but you have to wonder if he's still a "I believe what I see on the news" kind of guy. What I don't care to see happen is Yao and company start talking THROUGH the media about teammates on a regular basis. I thought JVG in this vein did a great job of keeping egos and miscommunications in check witih his closed door policy. theSAGE
While it would be nice to see Yao just so no to this silly game, the media circus is ALWAYS going to drum up drama wherever it can with Ron Ron. The circus followed him to Sactown and it most assuredly will follow him to H-Town. I treat this as a given. What is still an unknown to me though is how the TEAM WILL RESPOND should any real or fictititious drama arise with RonRon and another teammate, with the coach, or God forbid, another team. My presumption is that RonRon will give the media some degree of fodder for drama. The bigger question is how the Rox will deal with it. Until we get through ONE YEAR with no drama, I fail to see any reason why I should believe otherwise. theSAGE
Even if it was out of place for Yao to say what he did......We still have to be weary of not making a spectacle of himself in the media as he has and not to talk about MGMNT publicly as he has.
It's important to remember that all the guys who played the game say skill and talent trump chemistry every time. Only the guys who never laced them up speak like chemistry is some mythical power that all teams chase but only a few capture. They forget the teams that find this magic called chemistry happen to be the same teams loaded with talent.
This is what you get when you get Artest. Fair or not to the current Artest, the media is going to stir up something if they get a crack to it. Back to the topic. How this board reacted in the past few days was exactly what drives the media to drive the stories. Can you count how many threads started on this subject and how many posts were posted on this subject? My belief is that political agenda is usually not the main force that motivates the media (not that they don't have one). What drives them is simply attention. All they want is attention. And they know what kind of stuff draws attention.
