Is there a snarling dog defensive PG out there who can be had for cheap?

Lundsey Hunter is getting old but I think he still is a pretty good defender.

I said snarling dog, not bleating sheep.

For snarling dog, I am looking for the point guard equivalent of Gennaro Gattuso, defensive oriented midfielder for Italy's World Cup Champion team in 2006 and stalwart for AC Milan.

His nickname in italian is "Ringhio" - the growler/snarler. While not large in stature, he is large in snarl to the point where he vastly exceeds scowl.

This is part of a larger aim - to recreate the Pistons Bad Boys - quite frankly, in SAS terms, we are stacked with muscle and intimidators and pushers and elbowers and shovers in the frontcourt and the swingmen between Hayes, Mutumbo, Artest, Battier, Dorsey, Landry. We need a Gattuso-esque snarler to balance out the little men and give them a pit bull. Maurice Cheeks was pretty good at doing this. Rondo would fit the bill too.

Sam, Just a couple of thoughts- I understood that Mutombo was not signed to play this season and was considering his retirement.
The Rockets have for many seasons yearned for a point guard who could be the floor general and make passes to open shooters, ie a playmaker.
So if we were to be fortunate enough to get a great point guard he would need to be both a playmaker and a defensive stopper. :p

With the rest of the lineup being what it is now I'm perfectly happy with Alston. It was never his defense that bothered me; I think he's a perfectly good defender. It was his shot. We just upgraded our offense like crazy with Artest and Barry and Alston's a better than adequate starter for the team we have now. On some nights, I fully expect him to be excellent -- as he was last year. I'd be ecstatic if Francis turned out to be healthy enough to contribute occasionally as well.

Alston's D is so pesky. He gets in peoples faces and under their skin and just bugs them all game. He's an above avg defender. But the guys who give him probs r the ones who have amazing quickness or gr8 size

You do realize throwing 3 players on the court with limited offensive ability at the same time isn't going to muster much offense. We have to score too. Battier isn't going to create much offense in that scenario either.

Jesus. Just imagine it's our "end of the game, we're up 1, and other team has the ball for a final shot" lineup then...

Some people will f'n nitpick anything.

I'm going to say it: I love Rafer! i think hes going to have an excellent season next year no pressure to shoot so less bricks IMO. I think Rafer is a Good floor general(1st lieutenant?) he was the only one on the team that could get us into our offense and get Yao the ball where he wanted it. i think you guys are under valuing his defense too. the only person that i saw that gave him trouble was CP3 (notice i didn't include D Will)

Any point guard can run the show will do. I like Aaron Brooks, but he's young and has a lot to learn. We really need someone who can come off the bench and just be a floor general running the show. JVG recognized that as well after the Artest trade. I don't know who would be a good candidate. Steve Francis sounds like a long shot to me. He was talented, but I don't know about running the team. It's like hoping Michael Jordan will come back and play for the wizards after his retirement.

huh? wait. you mean he did?

    ...

and all star game too?

I'd love to nab Pargo or Delonte West.

How about JAson Williams though? He's pretty solid on defense right? Good Passer and ball handler. He ran a steady offense for the championship Heat team and he can hit the long ball.

I don't know if he can break ankles anymore though.

I still think he is a UFA but he might have signed with a European team, He could be insurance if SF3 fails to get healthy. He does have some size and quickness but how is his defense like? I also would like to know why other teams aren't apparently interested in him.

why do we need a defensive PG specifically ??? defense at the PG spot is overrated anyway. the rules are geared to give offensive players on the perimeter the advantage, its your inside defense that is really key. i think a pg with good D is just a nice bonus.

we don't need some great defensive pg, just someone with good quickness who can handle pressure and get the ball up the floor in a timely manner.

im perfectly fine with rafer being a starter, and we still have francis and brooks. if francis is healthy man that would be huge for us. i would then think we are 1-12 better than the celtics.

but anyway i think we'll be fine even if we don't add another PG.

We don't need to give up a roster spot to another player who can't score. Look at the big picture... It's not nitpicking, it's common sense.

i think barry will man some time at point and despite his age will be the guy we have been needing. i see barry splitting time at the one and two and three now...
