Just had a beautiful baby boy.....here come the bills! (at least it wasn't a girl, right?). What is the most efficient way of buying baby formula (Similac specifically) and where is the cheapest place to buy it around town (or which bulk order website?)....I mostly see 25.7 oz cans of Similac for $25.00...can anyone help with how they keep costs down? Thanks!
My new baby boy is two days and two minutes old. congrats. We're doing the breasfeeding thing, but it hasn't come in yet.........so we broke down and gave him some formula last night. Sweet, beautiful three hours of sleep!
Baby formula is regulated by the FDA so despite all the marketing, they provide the same nutrients. I learned this when my daughter wouldn't drink similac, emfimil, and nestle because they were somewhat disgusting (I tasted them all) compared to her mommy's milk. So I tried the generic/store brand stuff from the grocery store after some research. It turns out that all the generic formula was made by one company. She actually loved it because it tasted better. To top it all off, it was half the price. When you pay 25 bucks for a can of similac, what you are paying for is all the money and gift bags they give to the hospitals. I would look into the generic stuff.
We started off with Enfamil or Nestle Good Start because you can get coupons up to 50% off. But when that well dried up we ended up switching to the generic brand which is half the cost of the name brands. According to our doctor, not only does it make no difference when you switch between brands, but the generic stuff is just as good as Enfamil, Similac or Good Start. They all have to meet FDA requirements.
yeah every type f formula has a generic. Even the super new types have target brands available. Check sam's and costco too. Also never buy wipes from anywhere except sams or costco. They are SOOOOOOO much cheaper.
How bad is it if you don't breastfeed? I'm not crazy about kids. Frankly the idea of having an infant latched on to my boob makes me shudder. I hear it's the unselfish thing to do though. Maybe I'll feel different when it's my kid.
^^^ Formulas today do provide the necessary nutrients your baby needs...are they gonna be better than breast milk...no. But they're just fine to use. I say do whatever is comfortable for you. Breast milk may be the "gold standard" for feeding and may provide a bonding experience for you and your baby, but then you also have to consider the time it consumes...especially if you're working and you have to pump.
Breast feeding is good because you're sharing your immune system with your baby through your milk, also they say it makes your kid smarter. I don't know about that part. Also breast feeding makes you burn a million zillion calories, so that's a big plus. You could pump too. OP, Get used to spending lots $$$ on feeding your kid! After you're done spending lots of cash on formula, you spend lots of cash on baby food and real milk. We give our daughter organic milk $$$$$$$$ $6-$7 a gallon, it's worth it.
