Maybe it's just me, but Group B looks a lot tougher than Group A, ie, USA's road is harder than Argentina...

I think this is actually good. It may be tougher in the group round, but for the preliminary round, it will be easier.

Don't underestimate Iran. I'm rooting for Iran, not for the government, but for the people.

Group A has Argentina with Russia as its legitimate threat.

Group B has USA with Spain and Greece (sorry China) as its legitimate threats.

This will be an interesting olympics.

Iran have been blown out by Australia (3 times), Slovenia, Croatia, the Croatian junior side, and New Zealand in the past month. I think they'll be playing for pride in the Olympics. At least they have a 7-5 guy to write about.

top 4 team in each group advance to 2nd round? I guess China will need to take care of Germany and Angola. and face Argentina and Russia next round and got ass kicked, too bad.

Group A: Argentina, Australia, Croatia, Iran, Lithuania and Russia

I don't know if it's as hard as group B, but that's still a hell of a hard group. Absolutely no way you could even consider Argentina a favorite.

A lot of the big European nations in terms of basketball national teams like France, Italy, even Serbia failed to qualify.

i know, but i figured with parker, diaw, and batum, they had a good shot.

Anywho, personally Lituania, Croatia, and Russia don't really scare me. Greece is good when the hit shots, they so they definitely have a shot, but Argentina still has to be the favs in that group, esp if Manu is healthy. Now if he can't play, or is <100% then, I could see Croatia or Lituania stealing a game from them.

Germany is scary esp with Dirk who seems have played internationally this off-season than during the season. Spain is supposed to be a good team, though I know little about them. And if China is hitting shots, they can be scary, esp is Yao starts to dominate inside. I still think USA will win out this group or be at least 2nd, but there will be few blow-outs.

Argentina's group is a lot stronger than you think it is. You are saying Germany is scary, well they would have to have a huge upset to qualify through Argentina's group if they were in it. And yeah Spain and Greece are really good. Spain and Greece have to be considered a level above Argentina at this point. I'm not sure if it will play out that way, but on paper they are both better than Argentina.

Russia is a solid team. Great length, good athletes, outstanding coaching. And don't underestimate Lithuania. They have the best basketball system there is.

Its wrong that I say that, but Spain is clearly your nº1 rival. Spain has better team than ever. They beated Russia today by 91-56.

Greece is a qualifying nation... which means they didn't win their world pool?

In group B, there are 2 qualifying teams, namely: Germany and Greece. Those 2 teams ought to be easy to beat (although Greece won all their qualifiers quite easily...)
Then China automatically qualified because they are hosting the Olympics (otherwise they would have been competing to qualify).

So basically, group B has 2 weak teams (China, Germany) and then USA, Spain, Angola, Greece.

    Group A is much tougher:
Argentina, Russia and Lithuania are all medal prospects (Russia and Lithuania forcing Greece to qualify).
Then Croatia snuck in as the sole qualifier in the group.
Iran is the 'other' African nation
And Australia is the wild card - they easily beat Iran recently, and enjoyed a strong European tour without Andrew Bogut.

I'll tip the quarter finalists to be:
    USA, Spain, Greece, Angola

    vs

    Argentina, Lithuania, Australia, Russia
