I understand the rest of your points, and your opinion but I believe you are missing the point about the contract etc. What they did was overpay a developing player in the hopes of forcing Utah to let him go...they took a 3 year gamble as the 4th year is a team option... Did they overpay, probably, but the kid is 21, has been well coached, and his percentages improved dramatically last year when he got a chance to play. Seattle is not winning anytime soon, so they can afford to put him in the lineup with Durant and Jeff Green, this is a classic case of an organiztion making a smart move for the future. DD
Which ones? Which players still on the market are worth what the market (still hasn't) paid them? The problem is there are no more players worth what every team has roughly $6 million dollars to pay with. That's 30 teams. I doubt CJ was offered $4 mil out of nowhere with only minimum offers outstanding. Complain about the salary cap exceptions if you really think he isn't worth $4 a year.
Part of the reason why players like C.J. Miles are getting big contracts is because teams want to make sure that their offers won't be matched. The other reason is perceived upside and youth. If it pays off fine, otherwise it can become a headache.
a late lottry pick doesn't pay 4 million now does it? thats my point. i'll just let our different opinions on these players just go. cause all the other 3 players are for specific teams with specific styes, while miles would be perfect for a young team like okc. so i guess i picked the wrong players in my 1st post. i dont know, utah didnt look really interested in him anyways. especially with the all the players playing the same position as him. but either way, you are right that okc is far from contending and they could waste 3 years on this player if he doesn't turn out. well, with almost a third of the league not interested in potential players and needing in players that could help them now, that leaves 2/3s of the league. and i say another third don't want to invest money into an unproven player cause of luxary tax. and there are already teams (like Sac, clippers, sixers) that have used up their mle/cap space. imo, seattle played it safe. offer miles a contract that no one else offers, and just makign sure utah doesn't match, like DaDa said. i just thought, utah would probally haven't signed him, unles it was 1-2 million per year contrast, and that pretty much most teams weren't interested in him due to tax and if they had time to invest in a player like miles.
If CJ Miles is getting paid near 4 mil a year, then MLE for Landry is starting to look like a bargain.
I understand the overpaying because they wanted to take him away from the Jazz. I think he'll be good. So, if i turn out to be right they'll be getting him for cheap the last year or two. That will make up for the overpayment.
MY BOY CJ MILES IS GONE!! I HAD AN ENTIRE THREAD DEDICATED TO HIM...AND NOW HE ESCAPES OUR POSSIBLE GRASP! THIS IS ONE POTENTIAL STAR THAT WE MISSED OUT! REALLY HOPED WE'D STEAL HIM AWAY FROM THE JAZZ THIS OFFSEASON!
Looks like they will have a team name soon called the Thunder, though nothing official. http://www.koco.com/sports/16925692/detail.html "OKLAHOMA CITY -- A source close to the NBA ownership group tells SportsXtra's Mark Rodgers the city's franchise, formerly known as the Seattle Supersonics, will be called the Oklahoma City Thunder. Calls to team officials were unreturned Friday afternoon and evening. However, KOCO.com confirmed that the registrar for all of the NBA's Internet domain names reserved okcthunderbasketball.com and okcthunderbasketball.net on July 10. CSC Corporate Domains, an offshoot of Corporation Service Company, describes itself as a domain name management company for corporations, law firms and intellectual property professionals. It is the registrar of record for nba.com and all other domains managed by NBA Media Ventures, LLC. Over the course of the past two weeks, KOCO.com and SportsXtra have worked together to research what's called whois information on more than 200 domain names, with the focus primarily on possible nicknames such as Barons, Outlaws and Thunder. Most domain names and variations of them had been registered well before the settlement between the city of Seattle and the former Seattle Supersonics of the NBA. Most of these domain names had been registered by individuals, people who either register domain names in quantity for the purpose of selling them or those interested in owning a piece of Oklahoma sports history on the Web. Stay tuned to koco.com and Eyewitness News 5 throughout the weekend for further developments on this breaking news."
Not to stray off topic too much, but DAMN can Rick Barnes recruit. If no one left early for the pros, the Longhorns would have sported the following starting lineup last season: PG D.J. Augustin SG Daniel Gibson SF C.J. Miles PF Kevin Durant C LaMarcus Aldridge Wow.
You dont understand the economics of CJ Miles offer sheet. A late lottery pick dont come for free. How much is a late lottery cost if a team want to purchase one? I guess the price is 3.5-4.5 millions for a late lottery pick. Miles has been in the league for 3 year. If Miles is a 1st round pick, the coming season will be his contract year and his big payday. Also, Miles is a RFA, OKC must pay a little premium to prevent the Jazz to match. Otherwise, OKC is helping Utah to re-sign Miles. If you add up all these factors, Miles offer sheet is right on the line.
Landry is a late 1st round pick and early 2nd round pick talent. Jeeze! u guys really overrate Landry. Give me Paul Millsap, Leon Powe, Glen Davis, I feel like I have the same thing.
Miles has never played 12MPG, he never has been a major rotation player. This is a signing based on 80% potential, 20% performance. Gibson has averaged 23MPG over his 1st two years, last year at 31MPG. This is a signing 70% based on production, 30% based on potential. If Gibson just stays what he is already, it is a slightly but not horrible overpriced contract (not the same deal for Miles). Now if Gibson becomes even better than he was last year for the next 5 years, the Cavs have a bargain. Azub has played well for 1.5 seasons in a most unqiue system, and is older than both players. Less potential growth than either IMO. Overall I don't have a big problem with any of those signings--you also have to remember Azub and Miles are RFA, you have to take a greater risk of failure to live up with the contract or the original team matches. Talk about Udrih, Dooling, Lue & Diop for much worse value/riskier signings IMO in terms of previous production or potential. Finally, on Landry. He also is nearly 25, has played less than half of 1 nba season, and has an injury history. A contract more than Miles is a big gamble.
If you sit behind Corey Brewer and Kyle Korver in your 3rd season, you pretty much suck. So he's athletic and he can shoot. Yay! He's a scrub and whoever signed him, overpaid.
I guess that's Morey's strategy to let landry lock our summer up while no one or the rox won't even offer a contract. So we just play the waiting game.
Ronnie Brewer. And why? Ronnie Brewer is becoming an excellent basketball player. And Kyle Korver is great in his role as instant offense off the bench. I don't know if C.J. Miles is any good, but I don't think there is any shame in sitting behind those guys.
