The Wii is picked up by casual gamers, they are kind of like the Atari 2600, but for the most part people do not buy a lot of games for the Wii, just a couple. For the most part, while people with the PS3 and 360 generally buy a lot more titles each. The Wii has a lot of units sold, but other than a few products, they have not had a hit game....especially by a 3rd party developer...yet. DD
I'm not certain but I don't think that's accurate DD. IIRC, I think even Smash Bros. alone did Halo 3 like numbers in it's first month. I'm pretty sure stuff like Galaxy, Wii Fit and Mario Kart are all big sellers. I think I even read that Wii's software sales or attach rates rival that of the 360. I'll have to see if I can find the info.
Yeah, I don't think they're particularly accurate, unless he was referring to something different than what we are thinking. I want to say Galaxy, SSBB and Mario Kart all sold at least 2.5M-3M in the US (most of these can be seen from the links I gave earlier). Wii Fit might be reaching those numbers soon in the next few months or so. In addition, those games sold pretty well in Japan and Europe as well. I don't know if the Wii's tie ratio is as good as the 360's, at least in the US, but it isn't too far behind. Last I saw, it was maybe like ~5 for the Wii and ~7 for the 360. And the PS3 is probably around 4.5-5. Of course, given how crazy the sales for the Wii are, the tie ratio is pretty impressive (especially since it comes with a game...although I guess you could also negate that with Wii Play to a degree). The only point he might have is that they haven't really had many 3rd party games that have been hits. But like I touched on earlier, it will probably be a matter of time before some 3rd party games find great success on the Wii (of course, some 3rd parties have had success on the Wii, just not 3M+ in sales or whatever). I might even be wrong on that actually since I haven't paid much attention to software sales outside of a few games in the last 6 months or so. edit:Actually, I bet GHIII has had pretty good sales. Looking at the threads I posted earlier, it seems like it may be around 1M in sales just in 2008. Can't remember what it sold last year.
Nintendo doesn't need 3rd parties to sell well to make a lot of bank. Their 1st party games and accessories fatten them up nicely.
I would be interested to see the sales of Playstation Store vs. XBox Live vs. Wii Store. I was told that TV downloads off XBox Live generates the most revenue for Family Guy than any other medium or merchandise (I'm assuming this still excludes DVDs...maybe). I suspect that Xbox rules them all, but PS3 will begin to creep faster as they begin to add more content. Wii overall has been slow on the online side. I did get the Wii first and still play every once in a while. I am still waiting for third parties to understand the system enough to create good games for the Wii instead of porting them in the easiest way they can. It's still mostly the Nintendo games that can keep up the interest. It's gimmicky but very effective, alot of my friends, guys and girls, got the wiifit. I was on the fence between 360 and PS3 when GTAIV came out. Ultimately it was the BluRay victory that choose it for me. Xbox has a better online network and a better cache of downloadable games, and I'm hoping the PS3 reaches that stage someday soon (Japan has it) as I have yet to pay for an early generation game yet despite all the PS1 games I wanted to buy but missed. I will pay for mega man 9 when it comes out. I also didn't think I would be a graphics w**** but when I switch from PS3 to Wii, it's almost like going from perfect clarity to vision in the early morning.
True, but it would be nice for 3rd parties (and the industry in general) if they could make a lot of money of the Wii as well. I think Sony and MS mentioned how much content had been downloaded through their services in their conferences, although I don't recall the figures offhand. I'll probably download them later and I can post the figures if you want. I think you're right in assuming that XBL rules them all though. Blu-ray. Edit: Beaten.
They will if they can pass off a good and polished concept for the Wii. Why buy a below average looking game with a tedious motion control interface, when that same game can be seen in all its glory on the PS3 or 360? I wonder how well Rockband will do on it.
Of course. I thought you were trying to say that Nintendo couldn't care less how 3rd parties do on their platform, regardless of how much effort went into developing the games. I don't have numbers, but I did see rankings for the top 20 in June. It was at #12, which I guess is pretty good considering how much went into making the game.
