This is terrible. A big backwards step for the Olympics.

Between what happened and Tibet and here - I think it really reflects poorly on China and the Olympics.

This is unbelievable to me. I have a friend who lives in Beijing and I'm tempted to ask him about it.

As little sense and appalling as it may make to westerners, this is actually typical Chinese government reaction to deal with problems. This is one of the few areas where the bureaucracy moves unbelievably fast - but in a very bad way.

And the fact is there are a lot more ridiculous restrictions placed on the Chinese population which English newspapers don't pick up. Beijing is pretty much as closed a city as a capital of a country can be right now.

on the bright side, my general experience with bars in Beijing in general and Sanlitun in particular is that they totally suck.

Kunming however - now that was a party town.

Is this true? I know the PRC can be heavy handed but I have a hard time buying this. Since I'm part Mongolian I didn't know Mongolians were still considered trouble makers even after 800 years.

Might as well rebuild the Great Wall.

As usual, if there is bad report regarding China, the usual righteous group will jump out and condemn without ever questioning any reliability of those stories. Obviously, any thread related to China won't complete without the Tibetan or Japan reference from New Yorker.

Chinese people are just dumb, Hu or Wen will choose the global event to show the whole world how racist Chinese all are, just to prove our honorable Otto's theory. I would really be anxious to see any African American poster here to report back how they were refused a beer in a Beijing bar because of his/her skin color.

Of course, as the most evil creature on the earth, and as the source country of everything wrong in this world, what's the big deal of not serving a beer?

    Just pile on.

Beijing police raid busy bar district for drugs
    Mon 24 Sep 2007, 2:21 GMT

[-] Text [+] BEIJING, Sept 24 (Reuters) - Chinese paramilitary police swept through a busy bar district in Beijing, detaining about 20 African nationals suspected of selling drugs, witnesses said.

The raid at midnight on Friday in fashionable Sanlitun, also home to many embassies, came as police tighten security ahead of a Communist Party meeting in mid-October and next year's Olympic Games.

"The paramilitary police sealed off the street at both ends, then moved in," said a witness surnamed Wang.

"Some Africans entered the vans peacefully but others tried to flee and the police used force," added Wang, who works on the street frequented by young foreigners.

Other witnesses said the troops targeted anyone on the street with dark skin.

The Ministry of Public Security and the Beijing police both declined immediate comment.

Chinese police rarely get involved with foreigners if they can help it, owing mainly to poor foreign language skills. (Additional reporting by Ben Blanchard)
