I'm impressed with some of the high scores for Houston. Things have really changed since I was a kid. My neighborhood scored an 82.
I mentioned this in the "NY has a problem" thread but one of the advantages of living in a medium sized city with fairly decent planning is that I can get the best of both. I still own my own detached house with a yard on all sides (small yards but still yards) but can walk and bike to pretty much everywhere I need to go.
My new house is 25/100 and it's in suburbs. My parents' is 45/100 by downtown. I guess it's because of the sprawl out in the suburbs.
82 out of 100 in Houston, TX. Suck it, Austin. I chose this hood for its walkability... specifically, my current home's walking distance to my job. I haven't had a car for over year after mine burned to the ground, so if I couldn't walk to places like work and the grocery store I'd be screwed pretty bad.
I got a 46. Not many sidewalks here, either, to get to the places one would walk to (restaurants, grocery, banks, etc.) But my house is within relatively short walking distance of a lot of things (restaurants, grocery, banks, etc.)
hmm... 49 That's strange because, of the different things their looking for, they're all less than two miles from my house (and only three of them are over a mile).
Got a 67. But it missed whole bunch of stores and locations that are much closer to my home (and better) then the ones it picked. Considering I put a grand total of 1300 miles on my car this year I'd say my neighbourhood is pretty walkable. (i think my wife put 5000 miles on hers but that includes a couple of driving holidays).
74 - Very Walkable - for the Third Ward (77004). I have to object to the methodology, however. One, when it's 100 degrees in the shade, nothing in Houston is walkable (and, with so many renters here, no one bothers to plant trees to provide shade). Two, the restaurants in the Third Ward don't count as destinations no matter how close they are. Third, Scott St isn't one you want to be walking on.
88/100. I'm in the Upper Kirby area. Unfortunatley, the score doen't factor in the sweltering humidity, which drops the score, from my perspective, pretty much to nil.
