I need to get a cell phone. I have a company phone but we are limited in the use of personal calls.

What plans have you tried and liked? What are the companies to stay away from???

    Any advice will be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    OS

As for quality of service, I have had Voicestream for the past 2 years and have no arguements.

As for value, it depends on how much u talk. If you talk alot during the day on weekdays and just use the phone at home at night, I suggest getting Voicestream with their anytime mins plan. If you dont talk alot during the day, go for the others (Sprint, AT&T Wireless, Verizon) that have NIGHT and WEEKEND mins.

As for the phones, Sprint have some of the best phones out there but they dont have Nokia (u know the ones like one out of every 3 people have) while the others do.

I have Voicestream with a Nokia 3390 with 600 anytime mins (local calls only), 2000 weekends (includes long distance) and text messenging (including AIM) for bout $50 a month with taxes. They have better plans out now with free roaming and long distance with just about every cell phone company.

Hope any of this helps. :D

I have Voicestream as well. Got in on the 3000 anytime minutes for 50 bucks deal in December. At first, I had a few minor problems, but within a week they had worked themselves out. I am extremely happy with my service, and my cell phone. Sam's has these cell-phone booths in them -- that's where I got mine. I got the same phone i was looking at in the voicestream store for about 60 dollars less (Nokia 3390).

I have SprintPCS. My only complaint is the place I'd like to use it more (home) has crappy reception. Now mind you, this is just in my neighborhood. Because I can go anywhere in Houston and have a good strong signal. It's just at my home.

Where ever I have traveled to in the U.S. I've had a good signal.
Kansas City, Oklahoma City, New Orleans, Dallas, San Francisco, Austin so that's a plus! It's like a local call and I'm out of town!

As far as service plans, I have an older service plan so I need to upgrade but I don't want to sign a contract. Sprint always has some promotion going on so you can probably find a plan to fit your needs.

I've heard alot of folks with horror stories of crappy service and billing problems, but to be honest, I've never had a problem with Sprint and they have a great online presence.

If you go with Sprint, email me and we can discuss the possiblity of a referral... it could mean a $10 credit for each of us!?

    Good luck making a decision!

I think Sprint sucks. Even though we are in Austin proper, almost every call drops after 15 or 20 minutes. We had a carpenter working here recently, and his Sprint phone beeps when a sginal is lost. He said it beeps all the time.

I've had virtually every single service in the past 3-4 years.

-Nextel's connection used to be pathetic 3 years ago. I dont know how it is now. Anyways, they have ugly phones.

-Cingular, Voicestream and Sprint have crappy receptions as well. They did not work at my house or in school or at my work.

Currently I am using Verizon and I am completely satisfied with it. I probably have dropped one call in the last 6 months that I have been using it.

I am currently paying $45 for 450 weekday minutes, and 2550 nights and weekend minutes. No roaming in Texas and long distance is included.

rock, this is the problem I have with VoiceStream. Works great everywhere but at my house! I want to use it to call long distance when I am home, but can't!

Other than that, I have been satisfied, but not overwhelmed with VS. I'm gonna change since my contract is up this month. I'm thinking about going with Cingular.

I don't know how much you plan to actually use your cell phone, but if it's minimal, I would suggest a pre-paid plan. My wife was on a plan where she was getting 200 minutes per month for around $45/month, after taxes and fees. The problem was she was only using about 100 minutes per month...she only uses it in emergency situations or coordinating dinner with me after work, etc. Very limited. We went to a Cingular store and they hooked us up with a used phone for $10...and a pre-paid plan. She paid for $30 worth of minutes and hasn't used it all after two months! Everytime she makes a call it tells her how much time she has left....yes, the minutes are more expensive, but you're completely in control of how much you're spending. You're not locked into any plan...to me, that's the way it should be for normal consumers. Minute plans fit in great for organizations where employees are using tons of minutes and need to have contact with the organization and clients...but for the average joe, having the flexibility of pre-paid minutes is fantastic!

My VoiceStream reception is usually fine, but it does happen where it's only about 1/4 or 2/4. But it's gotten better since December, and I imagine it'll get better in the future. I don't have that problem often, just in certain locations. Usually it's all good.

I actually have great reception at home with a full signal. My sister has Cingular and has a great signal also from home. My mom has Sprint which has a weak signal at home but great signals everywhere else. Its funny, my whole family has every cell phone service, I have Voicestream, my mother has Sprint, one sister has Cingular, and my other sister has AT&T Wireless. So far, nobody has any complaints.
