Rockets GM dismisses trade talk involving McGrady

    07/16/2008

By CHRIS DUNCAN / Associated Press

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey said Wednesday that Tracy McGrady is happy in Houston and was surprised at how reports characterized his interest in being traded to Detroit.

Morey spoke a day after an ESPN reporter said McGrady had told him he would be interested in playing for the Pistons. Last week, a Canadian-based media outlet reported without citing sources that Detroit was making a run at the seven-time All-Star.

Morey said he talked to McGrady on Wednesday morning.

"He said he wanted to win and they (the media) ran with it," Morey said. "He said he's happy in Houston. He just was surprised how it all came out."

McGrady's agent, Arn Tellem, did not immediately return a phone message.

Morey said he had one conversation with the Pistons "a few weeks ago." He said he turned down preliminary offers, but wouldn't specify whether any of them involved McGrady.

"I don't want to say what was related," Morey said. "Whatever they offered, we said no to."

McGrady has two years left on his contract at more than $21 million next season and $23.2 million in 2009-10.

The 29-year-old McGrady averaged 21.6 points, 5.9 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game last season, helping Houston to a 55-27 record that included a 22-game winning streak.

The Rockets lost to Utah in the first round of the playoffs for the second consecutive year. McGrady is 0-7 in playoff series in his career.

What the hell were the Pistons trying to offer? Lindsey Hunter and Amir Johnson for Tmac?

I thought Stephen A Smith's comments about McGrady seemed a bit off, but I never take that guy seriously anyway.

Interesting to hear that they did indeed make an offer (maybe for TMac, maybe not).

Thank God this is finally put to rest. We're very close to be contending for the ring so trading Tmac would not make any sense for Morey.

Yao, Scola, Batt, Tmac, Skip... with Barry as the 6th man. Championship!

Not sure how the rest of the bench will pan out by the start of the season, but our starting lineup + the 6th seems to already be a lock. Just a little tweak of improvement with the bench and we're looking at another back-to-back here.

    Damn I'm so stoked!

Billups's name is the one that comes up in all these recent Detroit trade rumors. Maybe Billups & Wallace?

Sounds like Detroit is pursuing trades with several different teams. They're just being aggressive is all. They may have talked to us about Tmac, but nothing is going to happen, so it all means absolutely nothing. Steven A. Smith is the master of creating something out of nothing.

I bet Mcgrady is POed about how SAS made it seem like Mcgrady was interested in leaving Houston.

I think it's more in the line of the Rockets aren't interested in what the Pistons are offering.

I really think that 2010 is the year that Morey believes is when it will be time to take the team in a new direction if it still continues to not at least advance past the first round of the playoffs for when that time rolls around while keeping T-Mac and Yao together.

I oppose the idea of trading Tmac, however if they offered Billups, Hamilton, Prince, and Wallace.. I'd take it.

So why T-Mac even talking to Detroit? I hope they called him and not the other way around.

"He just was surprised how it all came out" suggests off the record more than flat out denial.

I get the feeling that Mcgrady said something like "i respect the pistons as an organization and I wouldn't mind playing under dumars." Smith made it out to be like he was pumped about going to detroit because he had a better chance to win there.

I don't even know how the rumor gained so much press. It was reported in a canadian paper and one that isn't even a real paper, but is one of those free papers that they give away to people. Also the reporter who wrote it is known as a hack and doesn't have much credibility. Yet his story got so much press.

Yep, get used to it kids.

We are stuck with McGrady for 2 more years at least.

    Like it or lump it.

I for one like it...Tmac is gonna come back to at least 90% of his peak. I believe it.

The good news is that if injuries aren't a problem this year [I pray to God it won't], with this roster we won't even need Tmac to be working on all cylinders. Much less 90%.

most of the trades that DO go through don't get much publicity. the brand to philly (everybody thought he stayed), maggette to warriors (everybody he'd choose celts or spurs)...

tmac to detroit never got even a response from morey when dumars called. dumars said is tmac available? morey said no. end of convo. dumars has been aggressive calling a lot of teams for players b/c he wants changes. i'm not surprised he called asking for tracy. but morey def. didn't even give him a longer response than a "NO."
