I thought that Mary J Blige performed really well. I dont like Outkast so that probably tainted my view of their performance.

vengeance, I think you're right. I believe I was wrong when I typed the NARAS.

so then, what does the NARAS do?

either way, the Grammys still suck.

    viva le Clutchies!!

p.s. paul simon gets up on his tiptoes and kicks bob dylan's gnarled ass in terms of who is the greatest American songwriter. believe it!

I agree about Mary J. BLige. She poured her heart and soul out on that stage last night. They should have given her a Grammy for that performance alone.
As for the Dylan song, "Cry A While" is a great song from his new album. But he did butcher it a bit up there.

I thought by the time Alicia Keys gave her third speech it was a little tiresome, and Nelly FUrtado appeared to be twelve years old giving hers.

    One more note:
JOn Stewart was a good host, I thought, but instead of cutting the winners speeches off with the orchestra, they should have spent less time with the presenters of the awards. They look akward up there trying to read the teleprompter, then the winners get two seconds to give their speech!

Eehhhhhh. I'm kind of dubious about that because Dylan has so much more material (and besides, it could be argued that the greatest American songwriter is probably Gershwin or Kern or someone like that). I'll also say that I've seen both of them live (on the same night, actually) and Uncle Bawb and his Get-Down Band made Paul and the World Music Collective look and sound *profoundly* dull.

    Some other notes:

Elvis (C) was there! This bodes well for a future tour! *Please* come to Houston...

Annoying thing about Alicia Keys (and nu-soul generally): humourless. She bores me.

That 'Lady Marmalade' remake could not suck more. It's so depressing to hear a truly magnificent song ruined by Christina's caterwauling.

Outkast, I love you, in an abstract and boogie-ing way. And Dre is the coolest-dressed guy in music right now.

And I'm with Jeff on that 'we berate you, scummy downloaders' speech. Ugh.

Some might argue that Cole Porter or Hank Williams are the greatest American songwriters. And I think Paul Simon is overrated and one of the worst culprits of musical imperialism.

caterwauling - what an awesomely appropriate word for Christina Aguilera. :D

I also agree about Alicia Keyes. That Fallin' song goes nowhere and sounds like a piano warm-up exercise.

I am suprised U2 did not make a comment about the music.
No matter what I still say Justin is gay and the whole Britney fiasco is a coverup:p .

And yes I agree Gwens a hottie but they said the slut look is in so Christina and the whole lady lemonade hahahahah marmalade was in style!

see. . . what you paul simon haters probably haven't come to understand is that you're wrong.

also, I've seen paul and bob on the same night twice, and all I have to say about that is that bob dylan sounded really good. . .

. . . once I left the arena and sat down on the steps outside. from that distance the nuclear alarm siren run through a blender that is his voice was almost tolerable. I did like his han solo pants, though.

people who think bob dylan is stronger lyrically need to q-tip more regularly.

gershwin, porter, williams and kern all swing from paul's little, old shriveled up nuts.

I thought only Carrie Fisher and Edie Brickell had that dubious privilege. ;)

I saw Paul Simon twice ont the tour for 'The Rhythm of the Saints' tour, and it was the same show exactly. Each improvised little gesture was repeated with exacting repetition. I didn't time it, but I'd bet it both shows were no more than 1 minute off of each other in terms of time. That sort of soured the whole Paul Simon thing for me.

He is a better singer, though, and if I ever have a child I'll sing them St. Judy's Comet when they go to sleep, as it's the greatest, most beautiful pop lullaby ever. He's just not a natural stage preformer.

Bob Dylan's one of those people who has these really great ideas, but the execution never is never quite what you can see the idea was. I actually really sort of enjoyed his outfit from the grammys. The whole 'Jed Clamptet' outfit was kinda bizarre.

Of the people who I'd put into that whole 70's singer songwriter category, I'd have to say that as far as live shows go, Neal Young is totaly and completely underrated. I saw him on the tour after he went out with Pearl Jam. He came out on stage, and played 2 or three songs by himself on a foot-pump organ. Then, he pulled out a guitar and a chair, sat at the edge of the stage, and took solo acoustic requests from the audience. (Less than a year after a grung-esque tour with Crazy Horse.)

The Destiny's Child performance with the latin singer was pretty good. Normally I wouldn't want Beyonce to dance with someone like she did with him, but I told her it was alright because she did it so well.

    DAMN SHE'S SEXY!

neither of which is as good as Bridge Over Troubled Waters or Bookends.

you can't compete with the poetry of drugs and sexual promiscuity. . . [here's where you can imagine a new, unique, and completely ambiguous smilie]
