You guys are overreacting to everything. martin is such an awesome athlete i bet he recovers in no time at all. his draft status wont fall that much at all if you asked me. broken bones are not injuries that slow you down for the rest of your life. although ligament problems could be serious. i think martin will be fine and i think the rockets would be damn lucky to even get him with their lottery pick. if an old barkley can recover from more serious injuries and return to be productive i certainly think kenyon can too. and dont count cinncy out in the tournament. mickeal and dermarr are excellent players and could very well play some inspired bball especially cuz their friend and teammate is gone. ------------------ --TEX
Should he fall below late in the 1st round, surely the rocks would take a gamble on him. They've wasted other picks before.
I just heard on one of the ESPN games that Martin won't even be able to run for 4 months. If my cipherin' is correct, that's a month after the draft. We'll find out who the gamblers are on draft day.
I agree w/Texas Salsa. I don't know much about college b-ball, but didn't the #2 pick this past year (Baron Davis) blow out his knee in his last year? That didn't seem to affect his draft chances.
hey texassalsa do you use that stuff from Bryan? I work w/ a bunch of guys from trilogy (in Austin) on a project in UT and one of them brought me up some awesome habanero salsa... mmmm....
I'd approve of the Rockets drafting him in the 2nd round, but not in the 1st. There are already too big of a chance that college players won't make it in the NBA. He is not a Grant Hill, Tim Duncan, or Shaquille O'Neal... ------------------ I have a dream.........his name's Hakeem.
I'm meeting with the Braves Top Physician in April and I'll ask him about the injury to Martin and what he thinks about his recovery time. He has had a lot of work in the last couple of years with the Braves and may have some inside gossip. Any other questions you want me to ask him? He is certified in Addiction Medicine, but won't talk about the drug issue due to some crappy confidentiality thing, but I can ask him anything else. Too bad he's not a basketball guy, huh.
I'd take Martin with the No.1 pick. He's too good to just write off as being an injured player who won't contribute. This is just a bump on his road to NBA stardom and I think he'll have great career once he's healthy. He'd even have time to make it back by training camp if the prognosis is 4 months of rest then probably 8-12 weeks if that of rehab. He'd be back in time and will probably be better than ever with the new medical techonologies. I saw a show about this doctor who fixes up all the skiers and alot of sportstars who works in Colorado and Picabu Street said she had a better than human knee after her accident a few years ago. And she was back in time for the Olympics after like 8 months. I think it will take Kenyon 6-8 months for a full recovery and that would put us right about October or November. My point is, he's too good to just write off.
I am assuming that everyone in here saw Pittsburgh Pirates catcher Jason Kendall's terrible ankle injury. I think that happened in early July and he is back catching in spring training. Sure it is now March and it happened 8-9 months ago but he is back and has been given the okay to play catcher, which is pretty demanding on the legs. I still think KMart can play by the end of the year, and be the same player he would have been. The ligament damage is the real problem. Many players have had broken bones. Elton Brand missed most of his freshman season after breaking his ankle.
Let me preface this by saying this remark, obviously, was made Monday's surgery which may show more problems in Kenyon's leg; however, a doctor is quoted at Cincy's website saying a 100% recovery should take 2 to 3 months. I posted his comments at my site as well. Real Audio is required to hear it. Kenyon Martin was just taken to the hospital with an air cast on his ankle. I'm not sure how bad it is. Keep us informed if anyone gets any new info.
I don't know about drafting Martin. Is he Rocket material? Traditionally, terrible injuries should occur only during the NBA season. If we do get him, I'm sure the Rockets veterans will help him improve his timing.
The articles I've read about the injury have been a lot more optimistic than posts here. Martin's doctors do not appear to think his injury is career-threatening or even draft-position-threatening. Of course, Martin has a vested interest in having the best spin on this injury as possible, but I'm getting the feeling that this is not as bad as some doom-sayers here claim. It looks to me that not only will he not drop to the second round, he'll probably still be taken early in the first.
Does anyone know what the rules are regarding team physicians being able to conduct their own examinations of potential draftees? My guess is that this whole issue will come down to what the teams' docs have to say about Martin and his rehab. But from what Cincy's doctors are telling the press, I don't see how this affects his draft position by more than a few slots, if that. If the Rox can get him towards the middle part of the first round, Rudy's a fool not to take him. I just don't think he'll still be available at that slot.
I just had to step in this somewhere .... (Now is as good a time as any.) 1. If Kenyon is available at Rocket Draft Round One or whatever .... take him!!!!!! For godsake take him!!!!! 2. As someone mentioned, the fibula is a non-weight bearing "support" structure. The healing of the bone is secondary (unless he develops some unusual problems) in athletic importance to the healing of the soft tissue damage (ligaments). 3. If he has proper orthopedic interventions including a careful, strict rehabilitation schedule he will recover in time to make an impact at the start of the season. Is someone suggesting he is not getting the absolute best treatment? Naw!!! He's getting it done. He'll be ready. Besdies, Francis3 will carry him to practice everyday. 4. I won't bore you with stories of athletes who overcame fracture injuries. Including Zeke who had a stress fracture (a "crack" transverse to the bone plane) and an avulsion fracture ( a ligament torn from the bone that displaces boney tissue as well as soft) both in the same leg, during the first half of a Piston playoff game. He stayed in. And, he played one of the most courageous games I have ever witnessed. 5. The key is: the right team has got to draft him. He may need extra time to adjust to the league. May need some tempered reassurance to limit (not eliminate) his minutes until fully recovered (soft tissue injuries require almost 6 - 9 months of careful assessment to begin to get "back to normal"). I personally think the Rockets would be one of only a few NBA teams that would have the patience for him.Can you imagine Jerry Krause drafting him now and letting him play limited (12-18) minutes? 6. Kenyon Martin will be a star in this league. See #1 above.
I read something that said he will be fully recovered in 8 weeks. I definitely don't think his career would be ruined at all. He may drop, but not by much. This just gives us more of a shot at him.
