No CD would have probably given him 3 years 15 million contract.

People don't seem to understand, with only the MLE available to sign players this is a very good low risk, high reward move.

This is very exciting. A consistent shooter off the bench, and a consistent backup at the 2/3. I cant wait to see us spread the floor with TMac, Head (if he can ever get back to his old self), Barry, Novak, and Yao. I would like to see that combo about 5-10 minutes a game.

I know...I don't know why anybody would fuss about this, he practically signed for free, well in NBA money terms, at least.

I agree, and I do like the makeup of our team for the most part, but I don't see how Brent Barry is an upgrade over Head or Novak. I mean Brent is a defensive liability, and he's old. It dosen't hurt to have him, but I definetly wouldn't call this a splash.

I just visited a Spurs board, some fans said he's arguably the second best player in the vs the Lakers. And most Spurs fans think he was the third best guard in their team.

That's a huge upgrade over Head and Novak.

Novak and Head are defensive liabilities as well and neither player has been past the 1st round of the playoffs and no championship rings. Also Barry's passing ability is off the charts compared to Head and Novak.

Luther is the worst passing guard in the league. Novak is the worst defender in the league.

Barry is such a huge upgrade over these guys that it isn't even funny. He is an average defender and good or great passer. The best part is that he doesn't get outside of himself. He plays his game and never tries to be something he is not. Like Battier, he might not be giving you buckets one night but we won't be killing you with turnovers and bad shots either.

Unlike Head, Barry is also capable of getting the ball up the court. So ball handling is also a big plus over both those guys.

Barry alone isn't the missing piece but he does give you a more reliable shooter/ball handler/defender off the bench relative to Luke Head and Steve Novak.

In addition to this move, Morey may try to get rid of Jackson, Head, Hayes and Novak via a package deal (or pair of deals). Maybe such a trade will bring in another scorer (nothing as exotic as Artest but maybe someone in the Jason Richardson and up range).

morey's first move of this offseason really looks good. i'm actually excited.

there are a few players that i've always hoped can be lifetime rockets. brent barry is one of them. yes, now he's old. but to me it's better than nothing, especially at the lle price.

not sure how i feel about this one....sure hes good shooter, but he sure is old. i thought we were trying to get a little more athletic in the back court ?

idk, guess i'll have to wait and see.

    Agreed.

Barry can help our 1 depth. He never played the one in SA's system, but he did some next to Ray Allen, and he could next to Tracy. He would be a much better in a shared PG role with Tmac than what we have had. (Head is purely a shooting guard in a PG's body, Barry has a true blend of SG/PG skills)

You're miserable. The Rockets get a proven player for nothing to clearly upgrade the bench at three f-ing positions and you drop a turd in the punchbowl based on the anecdotal evidence of two plays. That's lame.

What should be clarified is no one thingks Barry would be defending Chris Paul and Baron Davis when we talk about Barry running the point. The Rockets still would have a guy capable of defending a PG (Rafer, Brooks, Bobby, Head, etc) on the floor. Barry will nominally be on the wing, but he can take the role of bringing the ball up and setting up the offense in some possessions while the smaller guy plays off the ball.

It's always good to have an extra guy there with PG-type skills at a position other than PG. It takes pressure off of your primary ball handler and facilitates fast breaks because you ahve multiple outlet options.

Funny how folks here keep choosing to overlook that one tiny fact. So what you'll get this year is Brent Barry and probably Landry. There's not really much else they can do at this point in time. Barry will probably be OK if he can stay healthy but he won't make that much of a difference since after all he is a bench player whom they were able to sign for cheap and you get what you pay for in this league.
