Last night, wanting to join in celebrating a friend's promotion, and not wanting to risk either killing people by driving drunk or lining the city's coffers with my money, I decided to take a cab out. It took Yellow Cab 30 minutes to get someone to pick me up near Westheimer/Beltway 8 to take me to a bar not too far from there. At 11:45 pm I called Yellow Cab back to get another cab to pick me up and take me in for the night - same location on return as it was for pickup. 12:15 am - no cab. 12:30 am - no cab. I call them back they tell me one is on its way. 12:45 am - no cab. I call them back and they say one is on its way and to cal them back again in 15 minutes if it's still not there. 1 am - no cab. I call them back and they finally tell me that "there is no cab in the area." So I ask them to define "area." They would not. They tell me they made my request urgen and ask me to call them back in 15 minutes if I'm still there with no cab. I wait until 1:30 am. No cab. By this point I am enraged & seriously considering walking the 3 miles or so. I call yellow Cab back and this time they not only tell me that there is no one in the area (again refusing to define the "area") but also tell me that since their drivers are independent contractors they can't really do much more than ask them to swing by. So I ask yellow Cab if that means that I could conceivably be waiting until 6 am until one of these useless bastards decides to head my way. No response. Great. Anyway, another semi-sober patron who was leaving and going in my direction dropped me off finally at 2 am. As of this writing Yellow Cab still has not called to notify me that my cab has arrived. So what are my options here besides hoping these fools pick me up? Drive drunk? Fiesta Cab? Walk? Stay home? Go out and go Straight Edge? I have heard that cab drivers are not wanting to really go out past the inner west loop due to gas costs/fare revenue. Bar patrons who live in places like Sugarland, Katy, , etc. were telling me last night that they either cannot get cabs to take them out there after drinking or that cabs just don't even bother going out there to pick them up. Anyway, just venting, but even inside the loop where I live getting a cab has been unreliable in terms of speedy response and assured pick-up. Anyone have similar experiences with them?
You should start a rickshaw company and bring homeless people from the city out to the suburbs to run your rickshaws. flawless idea imo
There are other cab companies you could have tried like United, Liberty, Square Deal, Comfort, or even Fiesta like you mentioned.. Anyways...all cab companies suck.
We called Yellow Cab twice in Austin. First, it was 5 am, so of course we wanted drunk munchies; we wanted to go him to drive through Players. Yellow Cab said 15 minutes, so we waited about 25 and then just called another cab service who was there in 5. The second time I called, was this past weekend, and they never put me through to talk to anybody. I waited on hold for about 10 min, then said '***** it' and called a friend. They have horrible service too. SWIM got into an argument with a Yellow Cab driver (when he was paying for the ride) and the guy stopped the cab, and forced them to get out and walk. Yellow Cab rocks.
Get a designated driver. My husband and I went out this weekend and I was the designated driver. It sucks big booty, but we got home alive. Sometimes I wonder if drunk drivers or bums are scarier downtown.
If United doesn't have a driver for you, they patch it over to Yellow Cab. The best thing to do is get good drivers' cards and call them directly.
So walk 3 miles half-drink at midnight vs staying in the bar and waiting for a cab/ride while having another drink and talking to women... Hmmmm... Yeah I think I'll make the same exact decision next time woo. Also, the cab issues seem to be larger than just Yellow Cab's crappiness and drivers' flakiness. The first driver I had was b****ing that gas will be at $8 by the holidays and that he was screwed b/c a.) rates wont change to keep up with it so he's not losing his ass on gas, and b.) even if rates change people will just stop riding cabs b/c it will be too expensive. He said that at that gas rate, a trip to IAH in his Crown Vic would have to cost $150 for him to pay gas, cab fees, etc and still make any money on it. Why the hell are these idiots not switching to hybrids, nat gas, electrics?
that's the way i do with my boyfriend too..i don't trust any of my friends except one being a designated driver. i nearly got injured/killed when my designated driver was drunk and rear ended a car! good thing, we didn't go jail that night. drunk drivers are SCARIER than bums because they could hurt/kill someone.
... the government!! Na-ah...!?!?!??! Really? I thought ya'll died...! Really, do you need to tell us you "got home alive"? Capitana Obvia.
Getting a designated driver is easier said than done. Rocket G: "Hey, come pick me up and come to the bar with me but don't drink! Oh and then drive my drunk ass back home later!" Friends of Rocket G: "Hey, f you!" Rocket G:

Its just Houston.... be careful driving around at night bc the odds that the guy in the car next to you in drunk are higher than you could possibly imagine. My advice....knock up your wife. Then she can drive us around for 6 months. I'll buy.
Cabs won't come out to BFE and drive you 3 miles. It costs them more in gas to get out there than that crappy little 3-mile fare gives them. Next time either tell them you need a ride someplace far away or have several cab companies in your phone. Yellow is by far the busiest cab company. Inside the loop United has just as good of coverage, and Liberty is very solid, also
