title is misleading...for a second i thought we signed turiaf nonetheless we do need to lock up landry
Just because someone else made a stupid move, doesn't mean we have to follow suit. I like what Morey is doing with Landry. The kid has some game, but that kinda talent isn't too hard to find in the draft. Misleading title ftw.
Turiaf like Landry is a restricted free agent. They could have offered that contract to Landry instead. So maybe Landry's stock isn't that high around the league?
i hope it's not as high, but the fact remains that Landry's ceiling is probably higher than Turiaf, given that from what i've seen, Turiaf is mainly a hustle type of a player, doesn't really excel at anything. just a big body down low while Landry is more athletic, younger, and actually has a "decent" mid range game to go along with his motor. i'm sure Landry won't get as much, but probably will be asking for Turiaf kind of money.
In the rumor, it's Turiaf gets 4 millions a year from the Warriors. But I am scratching my head why Nelly wants Turiaf who cant shoot. I just cant see Turiaf can get 4 millions a year.
Turiaf is a shot-blocker where Landry isn't. This is totally in the wrong forum... And there's no need to throw the MLE @ Landry at all. If we do, we can't make any more moves. If we don't, chances are nobody else will, and we can sign him for less than the full amount (which would be nice).
if he's a shot blocker then rafer's a good 3 point shooter. luther dunked on him, and countless other players have as well. just because you go for the block, doesn't necessary make you a 4 million dollar player because of your "blocking skills". someone overpayed for this guy. and yes, this is in the wrong forum...
turiaf at this point in his career has shown more individually than landry has. plus, he has gotten a lot more media attention because he played for the lakers. given landry's knee injuries his value should be significantly lower, maybe around 13 mio $ over 4 years. that would leave enough money on the table to make an offer to mo evans that he even might consider.
Guys, I think you're missing the point here. GSW offered a 17 mil 4 year deal to Turiaf, mainly because he is a Laker and they are deep in luxury tax! Therefore there is a big chance they won't match esp with Bynum coming back and Turiaf won't even be utilised that much next season. Thats why the Warriors are offering him a deal instead of Landry. They know that we're not in luxury tax territory and have our whole MLE sitting here waiting for such an offer. Chances are LA won't match.
Rockets are $1.34M under luxury tax if including the LLE (Barry) and the two 2008 draft picks (Greene & Dorsey). That figure doesn't include the non-guaranteed contracts (Harris & Woods), Deke, or Landry.
Even if the Landry signging puts Rockets over the tax limit, it wont' be by far and Morey has all year to get rid of some contracts to get out of there. Lakers, I think, are deeper into tax territory, especially if they match Turiaf and bring back Sasha. I don't think they can dump enough contracts easily to get under the tax. Lets not forget about that Bynum extesnion coming up, too.
Turiaf is very underrated on both ends of the court. He has turned into an above average defender/shot blocker. And offensively he does have some one on one moves. I would say Turiaf and Landry are equivalent with Landry having greater risk/higher upside and Turiaf having more known consistencies. Turiaf is an improving baller. I liked him coming out of Gonzaga.
This is good news. Turiaf has played in 173 games, with 21 starts last year. Landry's NBA career to this point is a total of 42 games, zero starts. I'd say Carl, at this point is worth less because of the risk of injury to the knee and the fact that Turiaf is not undersized. They're only marginally comparable players, like comparing Kelvin Cato (a defensive FC) to Mo Taylor (a scoring, undersized PF).
I agree with this theory. Rockets would match that offer so it wasn't made. Lakers likely won't match because (1) Turiaf is decent but not worth that money, (2) they have a luxury tax concern, (3) they know Turiaf won't be getting much playing time with Pau and Bynum around. It is also possible that they offered the same deal to Landry and he refused to sign it. If (1) he wants the full MLE or (2) he wants to leave the Rockets or (3) he wants to play for a team that has a chance of making the playoffs, then he has to make his signature count -- he can only sign one document.
