Do you think young has the game to be a SF in the NBA? If so, a lineup of miller-iggy-young-brand-dalembert is very solid, just short on outside shooting.
This is kinda sad. I was looking forward to watching the Clips next year, (if you haven't heard their announcers, they rock) but now I know they'll be crap. It's stinks too because Brand's been a loyal guy all this time but I can understand wanting to go to Philly.
I like Young a lot but won't judge him until we see how much he improves his 2nd year. That's one of my tools to predict how much a player might develop over his career. If you look at the great ones (and most of the very good players in the NBA), they take the lessons gleaned from their rookie season and step it up the next year. To answer your question, I can see Young going either way. He has all-star potential IMO.
The Clippers have a lot of money to go after a restricted free agent and front load the contract where the other team could have trouble matching it. Perhaps they could go after Iguodala.
Young definitely can play. At the very least, that lineup alone might be enough to contend for a top 5 seed in the East. Like someone said, Brand gives them everything they need and lacked. Guess they'll be hanging on to Andre Miller now too huh. Frankly, I don't think Iggy is first-option material, but playing alongside a post presence like Brand and a steady point like Andre Miller, he could be very good.
Or Josh Smith. Or Josh Childress. Yeah, you're right, it's easy to feel a smidgen sorry for the Clippers or whomever gets stuck on their roster, but now they have a ton of money to lure free agents, so they might come out okay. Maybe.
When has anything ever gone right for the Clippers? Perennial doormats. Just once I'd like to see them do something right.
I am confused because ESPN is saying Philly offered most money at 82 mil while the Warriors could offer 90 mil. So did Brand take less money to go to Philly? I guess we will know tomorrow.
they have a solid starting 5, plus a few players on the bench who can play. they still are heads and shoulders below the top echelon teams of the league, they would be 7th 8th seed in the west even with the addition of brand. a great move for philadelphia, but still not enough to propel them to a championship IMO
Along with the Steve Nash signing, this is one of the best free agent signings since the modern collective bargaining agreement was reached in the late 90's. You just don't see true max franchise players change teams since the new CBA. The only examples of players switching teams were marginal second/third tier stars like Rashard Lewis, Larry Hughes, Corey Maggette now, being overpaid or even grossly overpaid for their true worth. It solidified the case that cap space in the modern age wasn't what it once was. Brand is a true max player, in the prime of his career. I don't think they will contend or anything, but the Sixers are vastly improved and finally have the inside presence they never had in the Iverson years.
Perimeter shooting? Half court execution? No offense off the bench? They have a pretty good foundation but need to continue adding pieces and hope Young's game can explode by the end of his 3rd season to be a "legit" contender. It's actually the 3rd year that is the most important in terms of a player proving he has what it takes to be a consistent threat.
Looks like another NBA off season where we get to watch teams make franchise killing mistakes by signing guys to big money contracts that: 1. won't get their team over the hump 2. screws up their payroll for years to come
The assertions that this makes Philly a legit contender or "fills their only missing weakness" should be rightfully cast away as unwarranted hyperbole. But Brand's signing with the Sixers is not indicative of what you just described above.
this is a great signing. he's worth more than what he signed for, and he fill a few needs for them. they were the 6th seed last year without a real go to guy, without any low post scoring, and without a starting calibur 4. right now, i'm penciling them in as top 4 in the east with the c's, pistons, and magic.
Great signing by the Sixers. Brand may not be a top 10 talent in the league, but he is without a doubt one of the top guys at his position and fills a need for the Sixers, who made a nice run toward the end of last season. I'm not ready to put them in the ring with Boston or Detroit just yet, but don't be suprised if they are there contending for one of the top 2 spots in the East at the end of the upcoming season.
So, Brand basically turns down the almost same amount of money from Clippers and spurns for the Sixers. Talking about loyalty!
