Death of a great comedian Spike Milligan changed the face of British comedy forever, his brother said from his Sydney home on Wednesday night. The author and comedian died aged 83 at his Sussex home in England. The last remaining Goon died of liver failure surrounded by his family. Milligan had suffered ill health for some time and had been nursed by his third wife Shelagh in recent months. His brother Desmond Milligan said Spike had a character that would never be forgotten. "He will have left a legacy of changing the face of British humour forever from its rather staccato, simplistic forms to a far more abstract futuristic form of comedy," he told AAP. Desmond Milligan said his brother had always been the eccentric of the family but the pair did not get into too much trouble as children. "Whe I was in little short trousers he was already a teenager playing in jazz bands. So, of course, we didn't see that much of each other. "So our paths didn't meet all that often except early at breakfast and other occasional times, so we didn't get into each other's hair." Desmond Milligan moved to Woy Woy on the NSW Central Coast in the 1950s with his parents. While Spike stayed in England, he travelled often to Australia, last visiting Woy Woy two and a half years ago, Desmond Milligan said. ---- Spike was a great comedian, one of the funniest ever (especially when teamed up with Peter Selers on The Goon Show). He will be sorely missed by comedy lovers all around the world. +
