I know they are from Tennessee, but Eightball and MJG are still Houston rap to me.

Pretty much everything they put out pre-Puff Daddy was great to me.

all of those were either not underground (had major mainstream video play) or weren't really all that hot.

The only recent underground hits i can think of are:

Chamillionaire - in love with my money
    Z-ro - I hate you b****

Most of the stuff from Mike Jones, Paul Wall, and Slim Thug is kind of comercialized and intended to appeal to people outside of Houston who are new to the slang and lifestyle.

Definitely concur with that. Those albums are adopted by Houstonians in my opinion. Hell, Coming Out Hard has downtown in the album cover.

Street Miltary was one of my all time favorite groups. Also check out Fakkulty "Southern Hostility." Those guys were beasts, but I think only had the one album.

Its a little older, but if you can find some K-Rino or Klondike Kat thats some good stuff.

Here are some other random ones off the top of my head.

ESG - Swang and Bang (original)
Lil Keke - Still Pimping the Pen
Lil Keke - Ballin in the Mix
Screwed Up Click - June 27th (Classic)
5th Ward Boyz - Your Life
SPM - Riddla on the Roof (the whole Hustletown album was good)
    SPM - Power Moves
    Slim Thug - 3 Kings
    Slim Thug - Incredible Feeling
Most Hated - Don't Hate Me
Paul Wall - Sippin the Barre
Paul Wall - They Don't Know
    Bun B - Thats Gangsta

I think it was last year that Lil Keke's "Got to be a G" was all over the radio. That's the latest "Houston-only radio hit" I can think of. Trae and Lil Wayne's "Screwed Up" was a good one, too.

Those are some great lists, though. I just saw the Geto Boys on the 4th. Fun.

EDIT: Oh, and if you didn't pick up Devin the Dude's "Waitin' to Inhale," you're missing out.

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, and no.

The only good song EVER with Mike Jones is Still Tippin.

Another Houston Classic would be Southside by Lil' Keke.

    oh and Swang by Trae.

What? Dude, Day to Day Grinding is one of the best Houston rap songs ever made. Mike Jones actually does a pretty good job on this track, compared all his other garbage. Chamil's hook was just plain incredible and Magno completely killed it. When that song first came out, it was so popular that the Dallas radio stations were "forced" to put it on rotation. It wasn't on Houston stations' rotations due to Clear Channel's monopoly, but this song was still on quite a few times due to demand. His first CD with Magno, "First Round Draft Picks", was definitely a classic. BTW, Still Tippin wasn't even Mike Jones's song. It was orginally released on a Swisha House CD, but Mike Watts wanted to promote Mike Jones a little bit more and put it on his CD.

If there was a good rapper/popularity ratio like a assist/turnover ratio, Mike Jones would be right at the bottom of the list next to Nelly.

Even with Soulja Boy dominating radio, when asked to provide a list of the worst rappers, he is the first name i think of.

Rappers are so wack nowadays. Plies, VIC, Souljah Boy, Young Joc, Rick Ross (overhyped), Gucci Mane, Shawty Lo, and all local rappers on Dallas radio stations. How do people listen to these weak ass rappers? If I had to pick the worst rapper ever that's famous, it's Shawty Lo hands down. This guy is so weak that one of the Austin radio stations deleted his verse on "Dey Know Remix", and just played the song with the other rappers. I thought I missed his part, but they played it a few more times without his verse in the song. LOL.

I agree with you that Shawty Lo is the worse rapper.

All those rappers you posted don't really consider themselves rappers in the first place, at least not lyrical rappers. Put them on a flyer for a show and it will be packed and people will have a good time. I would almost consider them equivalent to jamaican dancehall "DJs" (the rappers like sean paul, beenie man, etc) where it's not always about the lyrics but more of just how it sounds with the music. I know a few people who can write great lyrics or is an amazing freestyle rapper but wouldn't do anything to make a party or club hype.

I actually think shawty Lo is very entertaining simply because I don't look for Shawty Lo to get me through tough times or give me guidance in life with his lyrical prowess but rather just give me something to listen to when I want to be entertained. Shawty L-O. Bubba Gump Rap Shrimp. :D

Thank you. That was basically gonna be my reply to 'WhoMikeJames'.
Day to day grinding is still one of my fav.joints and I love everyone on it from magno to cham and Mike Jones. Mike Jones actually sounded 'nice' on those tracks.

You see the thing that i try to stress to people (and MrRolo touched on it) is that you have to take rappers for what they are. I don't know much about Gucci Maneand Plies but Rick Ross and Shawty Lo were primarily drug dealers (and not in the "i sold weed in HS" kinda way) they were serious. I don't think Shawty Lo was even a rapper until recently. And as much as i hate to defend Soulja Boy and rappers like him, he's just making dance music. Similar to DJ Jubilee's "get it ready, ready" its just meant to get clubs hype and have fun with.

So i have defended the dance rap and the crack rap. The guys that really have no place to me is the people who really don't talk about anything (ie Mike Jones, Nelly, Bow wow, etc) and people who copy someonelse's sound (ie snappin' rappers, auto-tune users not named Tpain, everyone being a drug dealing killer).

I think if you're blaming rap problems one particular type of rap you're missing the boat. Rap has always been diverse and had some things that people disliked but the problem is now there isn't really much variety. Talib Kweli said something like this on one of the BET hip hop vs. america shows. He talked about how he was OK with alot of the vulgar rap like snoop because it was variety. If anything i commend Soulja Boy for being original and not coming out acting like he was some teenage drug kingpin.

Definitely know about K-Rino. I have most of his albums starting with Danger Zone and Stories from the Black Book. I haven't gotten his three most recent ones, I need to pick them up.
