You said Cat was the best shooter on the team and then you accused me of making a blanket statement without checking the facts. Now you don't want to check the facts? Alrighty...

<b>The Cat is shooting 48.1% over the last 16 games at 26.5 ppg</b>

that's sixteen games at a 7-9 record, which is about par for the course when we aren't without the other stud on the team.

I'd say he's the best shooter over that span. His assists were around 2.9 at that point and have dropped since. Compare this to

Mr MVP Paul Pierce at 42.9% at 3.0 apg
    Wally 3.2apg
    Wells 2.8
The point guard for the Lakers at 2.5 apg
Piatkowski and Quentin 2.9 apg COMBINED!!!! both under Mobley's 43.4 FG%
    Steve Smith at 2.1apg
Rip Hamilton at 2.8 apg with only 43.6 FG%

And then mr ALL-DEFENSE Eddie Jones who should start over Mobley  with the whopping 3.0 apg and 42.9%

Then the biggie: Shandon Anderson mr consummate team player with the eye-popping 2.9 apg when he was a starter ahead of Mobley 2 yrs ago.

Then you have Dallas and Sac, who are the 1 and 2 teams in the league, and their SGs are 3.7 and 3.9, respectively. That's a whole 1 assist more per game. Maybe that is systemic and due to being on a far superior team.

One has to believe that being on a sucky team with below average frontcourt is a casuality as well as offensive design is. How else can you explain the Laker's PG with 2.5 apg, or the league's MVP candidate at 42.9% and 3.0 apg.

The point is: non of those stud players are coming close to Brent Barry at 5.1 apg. Trying to say Mobley is holding back better basketball is no different than saying Francis is for having the league's worst Ast/TO ratio for a point guard. Or is that Rudy's fault, but not when talking about Mobley. Neither of them are great passers compared to their respective competition, maybe that is why Rudy chooses a simpler approach to the game for them.

we are searching for something that isn't there.

Mobley should be shooting like this at 48%, and he has marginally the same assists to a slew of great SGs, anyhow. The guy is not a great passer by any stretch, but many SGs don't pass much. The stats show that, imo.

    TMo & JayZ750,

these guys, imo, have proven that they suck. we don't have very good players on the floor. steve is playing dizzy for God's sake.

moochie norris, dan langhi, tierre brown, walt williams, terrence morris, jason collier and glen rice, IMHO, don't even belong in the national basketball association.

that's over 1/2 the damn roster! who else is there?

KT: can't shoot...one on one player off the faceup post.
Cato: can't shoot...only good for the lob dunk (and he missed some of those)
Griff: still learning the game and putting on weight.
Torres: can't get the splinters out of his ass....(see: T, Rudy)

other factors 4 you to consider

    a) we only have 1 pure shooter on this team, and that is that teenage phenom on the bench: eddie griffin.

    b) our centers have hands of stone...see: willis, kevin & cato, kelvin

    c) our other "shooters" are streak shooters at best...see: williams, walt; rice, glen; torres, oscar.

    d) even if you assume they are "streak shooters", they become even lower % shooters because their man doesn't have to collapse the middle as much (since we have no inside presence), thus leaving them even less open than you may believe.

    e) he's hot.
    f) he's hot.
    g) he's hot.

    h) never ask a hot player to pass on 10 footers for the opportunity to shoot a 23 footer.

    i) rudy couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag. most of our players pitch a tent around the 3 point line whenever there is an iso, which makes them all 2 guards that can't really shoot so well...

add these up and you have a bad team, with bad schemes, with bad decision makers, with limited offensive possibilities. don't blame this on cat. give him better players with better options, then talk to me. all this bad decision making and he's dropping 27+ per the past 10 at a high clip. and you choose now to complain?  :(

    amazing...

Ok you are right. Kenny Thomas is the best shooter percentage wise on the team. That is a fact.

I guess we have a difference in opinon on what classifies a hot shooter or a good shooter.

Much like Allen Iverson I think Cat is the best and hottest shooter on the team right now. Maybe I am in the minority here, but I base my theories on PPG, which Cat has proved that he has been our best shooter over the past 10 games period.

You're not always hot. Cat has not always been hot - his FG% reflects that. Otherwise, you're absolutely right.

Sounds good. Compare his numbers with other shooting guards averaging the 30 games/30 mins per game stat I mentioned before. He'd still be at very close to the bottom of the list. Francis' assists are low for a PG as well. I just don't think this offense is geared for assists, but that's changing, and in part due to our guards new-found urge to penetrate. At the same time, I also don't think Mobley is as innocent of ball hoggery as you guys would have me believe. Somebody just quoted 1 assist in 4 games. I haven't checked the validity of that, but damn! :)

Lastly, the "he is a shooting guard, not a point guard". Oh please. As if there's some law against SG's getting assists. If anything, Mobley's game should elevate his assists total because of his ability to penetrate.... which should result in a dish-off.

All this being said, Mobley's been incredible the past few games even without the assists.

    DOD,

i'm gonna say this and end mine...

anytime player that is averaging close to 30ppg and shooting close to 50% (over a stretch) has the ball in his hands, i will NEVER tell him to look to pass more. when a player is that hot (and if you've played ball, i would assume you know what i mean), you pass when you have no other choice...

So I guess SG Allen Iverson shooting at a 39.6% clip means that he is cold?

I dont understand this fascination with FG%.....

    FG% leaders this year:
    1 S. O'Neal, LAL
    2 D. Marshall, UTH
    3 Dale Davis, POR
    4 R. Patterson, POR
    5 T. MacCulloch, NJN

I see 1 all-star in the top 5, and he never takes outside shots.

Using FG% to gage how good a SG is makes no sense to me.

Not to pick hairs here, but Kelvin Cato has the best shooting percentage on the Rockets.

    Carry on !!

I'll go ahead and say I agree with everything you said. I guess we just disagree on how often Mobley is that 50% shooter and when he's a 30-35% shooter.

Damn Drew, stop posting when you're drunk. :)

No one said that FG% makes or breaks an SG. We're debating whether Cat passes the ball or not and whether or not he does it enough based on the numbers he puts up - one of those numbers is his FG%. Using FG% solely to gauge an SG's performance makes no sense to me, either. :)

Iverson shooting at a 39.6% clip means he's a horrible shooter this year. There are several stars whose FG% this year are disgusting.

Am I the only one who is hearing about Paul Pierce being an MVP candidate for the first time? He's good, but not quite that good yet.

    Verse-

I'm with you. I like Mobley and think he is almost as important as Steve for this team. I can't understand why anyone would want him to play as a 6th man. He has a lot of talent.

But...it doesnt hurt to notice where a player's flaws are and point them out, not in a complaining manner, but to show how he can get better.

As far as this argument goes, most of the other players on the team do suck. But they dont all have hands of stone. Cato has shown lately that his hands are the complete opposite when he tries. Shooting guard or not, you dont think that with all those easy assists Francis gets to Cato, Mobley could also do the same on one of his drives the last few games. Francis also had a great shooting night yesterday, but Mobley didnt find him once?

And Mobley is not taking wide open 10 footers - if you watch the games youll actually see that Francis and Mobley are the anti-wide open shooters, but would rather wait until their guarded to shoot??? If he was, I dont think anyone could possibly have an argument. But a third of his shots come when closely guarded a step or two in front of the three point line. Don't get me wrong, it is amazing that he makes them, but sometimes I cring when I see them go up, especially because I know with his first step and with his great shooting of late, a little move one way or the other will draw another defender and creat an open 10 footer or closer, which most of our sucky players can make - even TMo can make a layup.

Players who are hot often find that all of their stats increase. They even play better defense. They just have a feel for the game for a given stretch.

Mobley is definitely hot, but the team is still only 2-2 in those games and the wins, if anything, come from the improved defense against MInnesota and Boston, not Mobley's great shooting. I give him props for exploding offensively and hope he continues, but often times an extra pass here or there will help get everyone involved both offensively and defensively and it would be nice to see.

    Mobley's last 16 games:

    9 games 50% or higher
    7 games below

    Compare this to Mr Wally:

    7 games 50% or higher
    9 games below

Final numbers: Wally is shooting 49% vs Mobley's 48% in that span.

Would Mobley shoot less on bad nights on a superior team like Wally does, which lessens the effect of said bad nights to stats?

    maybe maybe no

But 48% is 48% and 9 of 16 games over 50% works for me.

Oh, and don't pass to Mrs Torrence.

Why did you limit it to the last 16 games? I already stated that he's been incredible recently even with the mind-boggling 1 assist in 4 games stat. Maybe I should go find his numbers for the other 40+ games or the rest of his career? You guys confuse me.

The argument being posed by others here is that Mobley rarely, if ever, passes the ball. Not "Mobley's sucked the last 16 games". And I don't really care what Wally Szzzcwerzzcerebiak has done.

Try to answer the following instead of using blind stats and comparisons :

Based upon Mobley's stats throughout his career, is the fact that he rarely gets assists :

    1) Attributable to the system (ie, Rudy's plays, lack of talent, etc.)
    2) Attributable to the fact he's nothing but a jack up artist/ball hog?
    3) Something else?

After you answer that, answer the following question :

Is it really Mobley's fault or is he doing exactly what's requested of him in the system?

Why would you want him to pass if he is in single coverage?

Assists are a stupid stat to judge people on, because they're too peripherally based on how other players do.

    Like RBI in baseball.

Funny, how Mobley is the only one getting a thread-bashing, while Francis had 5 turnovers, and has continued to post high-turnover numbers, and Moochie shot 1-6.

Our offense just doesn't get assists.
    Reasons
    Going into the season...
a.) Taylor goes down. Instead of a sweet shooting spot up PF, we have a face up, off the dribble PF (Thomas)/A 19 year old that the defenses have figured out, for now.
b.) Rice/Williams go down. Instead of having a pair of hopefully pure shooting SFs, we end up going with Moochie-ball, and/or a PF at the 3 slot.

Besides that,Mobley is shooting better than anyone on our team.
