Song of the Year (given for songwriting) • "Drops of Jupiter," Charlie Colin, Rob Hotchkiss, Pat Monahan, Jimmy Stafford and Scott Underwood, songwriters (Train) • "Fallin'," Alicia Keys, songwriter (Alicia Keys) • "I'm Like a Bird," Nelly Furtado (Nelly Furtado) • "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of," U2, songwriter (U2) • "Video," India.Arie, Carlos "Six July" Broady and Shannon Sanders, songwriters (India.Arie) Alicia Keys and U2 will fight for this one. I say Keys wins again since the same song wins Record and Song of the year 2/3rds of the time. Best New Artist • India.Arie • Nelly Furtado • David Gray • Alicia Keys • Linkin Park Alicia Keys again. I think David Gray could possibly pull a shocker, but I doubt it. Best Pop Vocal Album • Whoa, Nelly! , Nelly Furtado • All for You, Janet Jackson • Songs from the West Coast, Elton John • Celebrity, 'N Sync • Lovers Rock, Sade Wow, this category kind of sucks. Probably Elton John. None of these other guys seem like Grammy award winners, although N Sync's Celebrity did get pretty good reviews for a boy band album. They could pull an upset. Furtado might have a chance as well. Best Rock Album • Gold, Ryan Adams • Just Push Play, Aerosmith • Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea, PJ Harvey • Hybrid Theory, Linkin Park • All That You Can't Leave Behind, U2 U2 wins. Ryan Adams has had great critical success, but his album really sucks. Best R&B Album • Aaliyah, Aaliyah • Acoustic Soul, India.Arie • No More Drama, Mary J. Blige • Survivor, Destiny's Child • Songs in A Minor, Alicia Keys This category has a couple of wild cards. Keys will likely win, but Aaliyah could also get the sympathy vote. Mary J. Blige just had her first big crossover hit with "Family Affair" staying at #1 on the pop cards for five or six weeks. Best Rap Album • Scorpion, Eve • Pain Is Love, Ja Rule • The Blueprint, Jay-Z • Back for the First Time, Ludacris • Stankonia, OutKast Outkast should win this hands down. Jay-Z could possibly pull an upset, but I doubt it.
I wholeheartedly agree with your prediction. I will predict, however, that Bob Dylan's "Love and Theft" will win album of the year. No matter how bad the Grammys are every year, and they are awfully bad every year, they always find a way to give one of the big awards to an old-timer. Last year it was Steely Dan, and this year it will be Bob Dylan.
RMTex--come on, what is so great about his album outside of the first 3 or 4 songs? That ten minute song is the biggest piece of crap I've heard.
I've never been into any awards programs, so I could really care less who wins...etc. But I am glad to see real musicans (such as Adams) getting some props here, and not only the same tired, old musical acts. I'd have to agree that U2 probably will take the honors, but I hope not. Adams' latest album is real music and a refreshing alternative to the endless steam of mass-produced, top-40 crud that has been thrust upon us in recent years. Its a great album; definitely the best I have heard this year... x34
That ten minute monster is my least favorite song on his album, but his album beats the crap out of 99.9% of the albums released in the last five years. Tell me what album(s) released last year that you think were better than Ryan Adams' album.
BTW, I have U2's latest album, and its mediocre at best. If it were by anyone other that U2, it would be hard-pressed to be considered for "Best Album". x34
I used to hate rock, alternative, 94.5 The Buzz, 101X, whatever category of music you call it until I heard Linkin Park. I hope they kick ass tonight.
after paying close attention to the carefully-worded, thoughtfully-constructed philosophical, moral and personal arguments put forth in the abortion, death penalty and racism threads, I would like to try my hand at articulating a strongly held, potentially divisive conviction of my own. . . and here it is: the grammy's suck. I like All That You Can't Leave Behind as much as the next guy [unless that next guy is named edge or bono and has fat cash in his pocket from the sales of said record], but it was released in november of 2000! is it that hard for the NARAS to come up with more timely candidates? I realize it's difficult because record sales can just keep growing and growing [unlike movie ticket sales which will typically surge and then wane]. but it completely beats me down every year how some record that came out before I'd shaved my head twice and grown out my hair twice is supposed to be the "hot" record du jour. it makes me wince at how hopelessly ahead of the curve of mainstream america I am. [imagine a winking smilie here; I gave up emoticons for lent] my prediction: good things will happen for The Bodyguard Soundtrack in the 2005 Grammy Awards.
Can we agree to disagree with you on this one? I mean, REALLY disagree? U2 will clean up this year because of their Super Bowl appearance (publicity) and two of their nominated songs ("Walk On" and "Stuck in a Moment You Can't Get Out Of") resonated in the post-9/11 world. And I love their album. But I won't watch that f'n show.
