you know, one of those portable ones... like the RIO, I-paq, Lyra?? I'm considering getting one and was wondering if any of y'all had one and what you thought about your MP3 player!? Anything you like or dislike about it? I'm considering a RIO or a Lyra... the Lyra doesn't play MP3's it converts your MP3's to MPX files... kind of a bummer.
I have a Rio 600 and it works pretty good. Problem is that it only stores about 8 songs (I guess its like a 4mb memory pack or something). Also I have noticed that when I stick the headphone jack in all the way, it only works out of 1 ear..... I wouldnt reccomend it. I hear the I-paq isnt bad.......
is a portable mp3 player a better option than a cd player if you want something to listen to while jogging? and if so, can anyone recommend a make and model?
I think a portable MP3 player is far more superior to a CD player... unless the CD Player plays MP3 disks and it has like a 1 minute shock protection... I think a portable MP3 player is better because it doesn't skip, it's way smaller and you can store more songs than a single CD... although I know I can't run as far as it would take to play a whole CD...
I had the same headphone problem with the RIO 800. I took it back and the new one works fine. Generally the RIO 600 comes with a 32MB backpack. For most MP3 files you can equate 1 MB=1 minue of music. I use the RIO 600 and my wife uses the 800 for listening to audible.com audio books.
iPod, baby! 5Gb = 1000+ songs (high quality MP3) in a package the size of a deck of cards. My main use is to take my faves + "currently listening to" with me on the occasions I'm on the road. Main difficulty for most folks is that a Mac or firewire PC is needed.
The other difficulty is that at least the first generation ipods had a nasty tendency to reformat hard drives...
I have the intel mp3 player. I have never had one problem with it despite running through the rain, getting sweated on, and crashing into the ground several times. It holds about 30-35 songs. I had the Nomad jukebox thing and it crashed several times on me. The thing was horrible despite it's ability to hold a 1000 songs or whatever.
I've been considering the Archos Jukebox. http://www.archos.com/us/products/product_jbplayers.html Pros: 20Gb HD, eat my dust iPod. Can be used to store other files, using it like a portable HD. Cons: Heavy - 12oz. Expensive! Around $300 I've been trying to justify buying this because I can use it for work - portable HD.

Back in the day when nothing else was available, I had a Rio 300. It was pretty utilitarian, but it withstood a beating and sounded ok. Of late, I have been using my iPAQ handheld for portable music playback. Surprisingly, the sound quality is excellent. I really don't have much of need for a $400 device that only plays music on expensive memory cards or hard drives. For that price, I expect more from the device (ability to store data files, etc). Can't beat the geek factor, though... The most interesting devices are those CD/MP3 hybrids that can play standard CDs or MP3 encoded disks (for up to 20 hours of playback per disc). Compaq has a mini-cd MP3 player that holds up to 6 hours of music on any 3" cd-r/rw, has 8 minute skip protection, remote, and rechargable batteries for under 100 bucks. Another advantage is that the discs are cheap and can also be played back in many consumer CD players and all computers. http://athome.compaq.com/showroom/static/ipaq/pm1.asp x34
I have the Compaq one...I like it alot and take it with me pretty much everywhere. I have to have dropped it at least 20 times and it still works like a dream. Its about the lenght of your thumb and easily goes on a belt buckle, shirt pocket... It comes with 2 32 MB disks. Not very efficient though...I often replace the batteries more than once a week. Which reminds me, does anyone know anything about those battery-rechargers?
Here's the game: If you select "About" from the main menu, then hold the center button for a couple seconds, a mini breakout game appears on the screen.
I think I'm going to wait on one of these to see if they go out of style as quickly as the mini-disc did, although I do not see it happening as quickly.
