I love Japanese and Chinese food -- I could eat both all night and dim sum.

Try Kenichi for sushi. It is around the 6th street area downtown. There is one in Dallas and it goes off. The specialty rolls and raw stuff are the best (ie yellowtail with jalapenos etc)

My buddy and I used to work there acouple of years back, as Dim-Sum boys.

I'd say their dim-sum is pretty good. I would know because me and my buddies would sneak some in the back after work. :D Love the crab claws. yumm.

:) Don't let that tidbit deter you from enjoying what's good. I'd still eat if I went there knowing what's in the sauce.

I had several friends work there when I was in college. (3 years ago) So like you, I'd rave about it. And they'd burst my bubble. But it's ok, just have it in moderation, or just share the roll with a friend.

Also guys, one of my good friends is opening up his sushi restaurant in Austin. He used to work at Sushi Sake, then moved to Kenichi (the downtown ritzy sushi bar) and became head chef there! He left to setup his own shop which should be comparable to Umi's, Musashinos, Miyakos and Kenichi.

God, I forgot the name but I'll bump up this thread when he opens it up.

Where's a badass place for sushi in Houston? Any suggestions besides the usual miyakos or Ra?

    Nice try. LOL.

    Even better.

I can eat sushi all night long. I usually go to Miyako's during happy hour.Anything with scallops in it = yummy. I'm getting hungry now. Thanks DD.

Sushi is pretty awesome. I'm not picky though, I just don't like it too cold. Salmon and tuna sashimi is good. I try to go for the low-cal stuff whenever I go out for sushi so it's either sashimi or California Roll.

I have eaten at most of the sushi places here in Austin.

Uchi is good but SOOOOOO over priced it is just not worth it. I think I took a buddy there for a business dinner and we spent about $400 on dinnner and drinks.....not even close to worth it.

Kyoto 2 - above the Elephant room is one of my favorite haunts, we officed across the street and the Godzilla special is fantastic, my favorite....

Masuchino(sp) is good but too far north for me.

Tokyo Taipan Steak House - at the Y in oak hill has AMAZING sushi for a small place, they have a nice Sushi chef during the day and I go there for lunch and sit at the sushi bar, very reasonably priced and a hidden gem.

Dim sum....THANK you for all the suggestions, gonna have to go try them.....

There used to be a place over by Westgate called the Rainbow Cafe that did Dim Sum but it closed a few years ago......I need a new place.

I also like the shanghai restaurant, by far the best dim sum in austin. That place gets crowded on weekends if you wake up late.

Hmm Cali must've spoiled me but there's more to sushi than spicy tuna or california rolls.
