My girlfriend has a 2007 Nissan Altima with keyless entry, remote, and start features. The features on the keyless remote have some reason stopped working. She cannot lock, unlock, open the trunk, or activate panic mode. The keyless start and entry features require the keyless remote to be near the car in order to use either of those features and they still work fine but none of the buttons do. We've changed the battery with no luck as well. I told her to take it to the local dealership to see if it may need to be reprogrammed. They tell her that they cannot reprogram hers but they can give her a new one and reprogram it. It would cost about $120. I told her to get a second opinion from another dealership because he didn't give her a reason why he could not reprogram the one that came with her car and only offered the new purchase as a remedy. Am I correct that she should obtain a second opinion or should she fork over the money for a new set?
Hmmmm... my '08 Ford Expy tells me how to program it right in the owner's manual... Also, you may want to google it, be specific... and look for a .pdf on the topic. This should be pretty simple... involving some turning of the key back and forth to the "on" and "off" and/or "acc" positions followed by pressing and holding the right buttons. Also, sometimes the transmitter "gets confused" and the key will still start the car. Then, after shutting it off it transmits a new signal and there is no more problem. But otherwise, sure... the dealership should not charge for such a new car, or it should be a simple warranty deal... One more idea... take the car to a an independent aftermarket car audio and electronics store that installs alarms... A lot of the techs that install the aftermarket stuff know the tricks to program cars' factory stuff, or at least have a website with the info handy. Hope it works out... let us know.
My brother has a 07 Altima as well. The keys are defective. They will brick themselves if you put them too close to a cell phone. It's already been recalled, and they'll give you new keys at the dealership. Don't let them charge you $120. They are trying to rip you off. When she got her car, there should have been a letter packaged with the owners manual telling her to keep her cell phone at least 1 inch away from the key fobs, and that new keys would be available free of charge by the end of 2007. I hope that solves your problem!
http://www.nissanclub.com/forums/new-2007-2008-nissan-altima-discussion/263385-i-key-recall.html "Hi Everyone this is for people that bought their altimas used you might not be getting a recall letter in your name to your address. But there is a recall on The I keys if they are put to close to some certain phones probably GSM they will no longer function and render the remote useless. The recall is on 2007 altimas only I think not sure but I recieved my initial letter about the problem in december 2007 and then Got the recall letter Last month january 2008. Look at yoor key fob with the key pulled out and check the numbers on the bottom if it is "07 Barcode XXX(three numbers)" I would suggest asking the dealer about it because they will replace them for free any and all I keys. I just had mine exchanged last week But I never had a problem with it but I do have Verizon not a GSM phone. But for that Just in case chance it might get messed up I don't want to pay $200 for a new I key. It only took an hour all our cars should still be under warranty unless you went over your covered milage. Hope this gets everyone informed."
