Is it just called Chinese Café? I know there is a place on 290 and 43rd called C & S Chinese Café (or something like that) which is very good. Not very fancy on the inside though, so it’s better for takeout. I’ve been to the Melting Pot and I have to say that is the most overpriced food in the city. Dropped over $100 for a dinner for two about a year ago. Never again. I’ll admit that I don’t understand the whole fondue craze. The cheese got hard after about 10 minutes (even though the flame was still going), the bread was stale, and the sauce for the meat was nothing special. Not even close to being worth all that money. Is fondue a chick thing or something?
yeah, but the food is exactly the same, I'm almost 100% positive they are all affiliated, there's also one on richmond just west of the loop next to the 24 hr fitness (i believe that's the gym)
They might be affiliated, but they all don't taste the same. There is one in Sugarland on Highway 6 and it sucks. The one on Richmond by the Galleria is pretty damn good, but the Bellaire one is the best.
I believe the only Chinese cafes that are affiliated are the ones on Richmond and Bellaire. A quick search on b4-u-eat shows that as well. http://www.b4-u-eat.com/houston/restaurants/reviews/rsv0831.asp
Back on topic, I finally went to Hugo's for the first time a few weeks ago and liked it so much we went back the next weekend. Good traditional mexican food and a nice atmosphere. But it is pricey. After food/drinks/tip my bill for 2 of us came out to just over $100. I've always been a fan of Damian's but they let me down on Valentine's day this year. Some of our food came out cold and was a real let down from the great meals I'd had their in the past. I'll chalk it up to the fact that it was a holiday and give them another shot.
Apologize for digging this thread back up, but I fell like going out for a great dinner tonight. Judging by what people have posted here, I'm thinking about Catalan or Damian's. Anyone else have some ideas?
Catalan and Damian's both rock. I went to Armando's for the first time over the weekend...very marginal. I've been jonesing for a lobster at the Palm lately.....
yeah, i've never heard anything other than "it was okay" regarding armandos. finally went to ibiza last sunday, and i came away impressed. the food wasn't out if this world, but everything we ordered was good and done well. not very cheap, but nothing outrageous either. definitely will have to check out catalan. also made it out to the grand opening party at soma last wednesday... only sampled the hor'dourves, but i came away liking the hot items moreso than the raw sushi items. i found the deepfried rice ball with a meat filling (i forget what kind ) delicious. but of course it's hard to really get a good grasp on what their food is like at a big party (with free booze ), so we're planning on going back this week or the next. and i strongly second an upscale vietnamese establishment... somebody needs to get on that ASAP.
It's in the Randalls shopping center at Westpark and Buffalo Speedway. Check it out...it's pretty good.
We really like Americas on Post Oak, great food and atmosphere. South American style food. They are now owned by Churracos, so the menus are similar. I like the America's atmosphere better though.
Yeah... Apparently not. I just texted her these two ideas and she said that Catalan's sucks and Damian's is too salty. Back to square one. I am looking for a "nice" place for tonight. Not sure why. Just hungry.
i thought mockingbird bistro near river oaks was fantastic... definitely a little on the pricey side, but every dish we ordered was terrific - and there were 7 of us so we tried many different items.
Food is subjective; still.........it's hard not to think she's a moron if she thinks Catalan sucks. Nevertheless--and I haven't been there--I'm hearing more and more people rave about the Grove. One rave came from a person who hated it when it first opened, but got drug back..........and now claims to be a convert.
She thinks Catalan sucks??? Wow. How about Da Marcos, Mark's, Gravitas, 17 ( is it still open?), Hugo's, or Mockingbird?
The Grove is decent not great by any means. It is a cool scene and all and I really dig the whole Discovery Green thing. I just wonder if it's just coincidence that The Grove starts getting popular immediately after reports of Sean Penn repeatedly visiting it. Ya'll should really check out the little glass shack next to The Grove in Discovery Green. It serves Kobe Beef Hot Dogs and the burgers are a combination of sirloin, brisket, and bacon in the ground meat. Good stuff.
