I have a bunch of hives on my arm, chest and leg. I think it was caused by some food allergy, but I'm not really sure. I can't see the doctor till Monday, so I didn't know how to treat it.

I was told just to take Benadryl.

Does anyone have experience with hives or treatment for it?

    Thanks.

I've had it once before...terribly itchy. If it's mild, just go with Benadryl...if not, I think you need to get it checked out.

    Yes I do.

I have gotten them 3 times in two years for no reason. This is after 27 years of never having them.

Nothing unusual. One time My face (eye) blew up like in the movie Hitch. I was eating Shrimp in Louisiana and I rubbed my eyes. I saw the doctor and she said to eat more shrimp and see if t comes back. it never did so i guess it was something with the seasoning.

Sometimes they can be caused by stress. Not necessarily mental stress. The last time I got them I was getting gelato and I felt it was a little hot in the place but I didn't want to complain to the people I was with. So I just sat there. I felt myself getting warmer and warmer and before I knew it I had hives under my arms and on my back. I tend to get them on my back, under arms, arms temples.

Took a benadryl and they were gone.

Nowadays if I feel my tongue swell up or a feel itchy for no reason I take a benadryl so I won'tt look like Hitch anymore.

yeah, benadryl should be fine unless it's accompanied by a fever also or something..

i kept trying different things to determine what the food allergy was..took a while and took some discipline to not eat any typical allergens aside from the one i was looking for..

if you feel yourself getting hives always be concerned with how your throat feels. My friend who is an ER doc said you have to make sure your throat is not swelling shut.

I don't have any hives on my face or throat. But they are on my arms. This is the first time I've ever had them and I'm 26. I've been taking Benadryl tablets but it doesn't seem to be helping.

My diet has pretty much been the same for the past two years. I tried this new Nature Valley Pecan Bar the other day, so I think that might be the culprit.

Should I try something more powerful like Claritin or Zyrtec?

i had it not too long ago. it was also a food allergy reaction (grapes? strawberries?)

i just itched like hell and waited it out. then it was gone.

doctor wanted to do some testing to see what was the cause but not worth the money.

I would not take more medicine if you already took a benadryl. You could always call a 24 hour Walgreen's and speak to the pharmacist.

Sounds fruity but try a bath.

I hear if you spray windex on it, your arm will be fine.

    ^ My Big Fat Greek Wedding - what'd I win? ;)

Mrs. SwoLy gets these thingies from eating crustaceans' meat (shrimp, lobster, crawfish, etc.). It is different if they're small cocktail shrimp or the large cooked frozen shrimp from Sam's.

Go to an allergist and they will test your skin with different fods. Didn't you get a referral  ? You should have.

My kid got hives from some meds she was taking once. The doctor just told me to give her benadryl when I took her in.

If your allergic reaction were worse the doctor might tell you to get some epinephrine, but I doubt you'll need that since you just got hives.

as long as your lips, toungue, etc are not swelling up, you'll be fine.

Ive had these allergies for years including ones where I had to go to the emergency room for. The tough part is figuring out what is doing it to you. If it keeps up, you need to keep a food diary and bring it to the dr.

I had hives twice in NYC at the apartment of a girl I was dating there. I had them all over my chest and abdomen and they itched like crazy. Benedryl definately helped. I checked with an allergist and he said it might not have been a food allergy but possibly a reaction to her cat. Its odd since I have a cat myself but its possible that not all cats are the same and the allergy might have something to do with that specific cat.

I got it once when I was a kid from a bad batch of generic Kool Pops.

Take benadryl for the itch and wait it out...it's all you can do.

I spent the night in a Louisiana emergency room @ 2:30am after my wife had some Louisiana shrimp. First time ever she had a allergic reaction.

Lips 3x bigger than angelina jolies.

there's no cure for hives. docs don't know what causes them or how to cure em. my mother's suffered through them on and off her whole life. it's pretty awful.
