In need of a fresh place to run on the weekends in Houston. I currently run at memorial Sat and Sun mornings. I'm looking for anything with some shade and mile/distance markage.
"I'm not a jogger, I haven't anything against them it's just their always the ones to find the dead body. You never hear about people who find them while sitting on the couch eating ice cream and watching porno. I was changing porno tapes when I saw a foot. I dropped the lube and called the cops..." <- name that comedian (difficulty: easy) Try the ELDRIGE/MEMORIAL/BAYOU place by... I think it's Dairy Ashford? Google Map
Rice University is a good spot... Park in the free visitor parking on Greenbriar entrance. Just know it is about a 3 mile loop and you should be good to go...
Rice track is almost exactly 3 miles and completely shaded. Can park free at the Stadium lot closest to Rice Villiage. Also, you can run around Hermann Park golf course which is probably 90% shadded and it is right at 2 miles. If you run Rice and then cross Main St. to Hermann Park, that's a good 5.5 mile course that is almost completely shaded. The Hermann course is much nicer cause most of it is off the street and no cars wizzing by but at only 2 miles so it's kinda short.
When I was in Houston, I used to run at Hershey Park. Its a really great place to jog, as there are rolling hills and great scenery all around. Alot of trees as well for shade. I think its one of the hidden gems on Houston's west Side. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Hershey_Park
Rice U/Herman is indeed a nice place to run. There's also the paths between Allen Pkwy and Memorial btwn Shepherd and Downtown. Braes Bayou can give you good distance, but is fairly poor w shade. http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ very helpful way to double check your distance I'm enjoying a nice multi-city swing: in the past week, I've jogged the Vegas Strip, Toronto Island Park, and the National Mall. I highly recommend Evan
From my house up to Heights Boulevard down to 20th and back is exactly 3 miles. I run that at least 5 times a week. Ok, I'm close to running it all. As of now, I run about half and fast walk the rest.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Sucks that every "naturey" running spot is in the other side of town from me (Fuqua/45). Anyone know of anything South? In Clear Lake or something?
Used to live down there 15 years ago so I'm a little outdated. But Challenger Park was very nice. I forget exactly where it is, however. Other than that, there aren't a whole lot of shaded areas ...at least there wasn't then.
Tom Bass park is a really nice big park just west of you off Beltway 8. That would make a great place to run. http://www.co.harris.tx.us/comm_lee/PTBassI/
