Head isn't cut out for the NBA game where guards are bigger, faster, stronger. He is a good shooter but his shot release is seriously flawed for a short player. First, his release isn't that quick (he has to **** his arm back). Second, he actually jumps forward on his shot, helping defenders close out faster on him. I think his shooting form also effects his midrange game. Its been covered about his lack of ball handling, vision, passing abilities, and decision making. An undersized, skinny SG who has no chance of converting to a PG and has a flawed shot probably isn't a very good long term solution.
Honestly, if Luther is aggressive like this more often, I think most of us wouldn't be so adamant about trading him.
This can't be a serious post... yet I see no sign of sarcasm. It should be illegal to make any comparisons between Tim Duncan and Luther Head/Steve Novak. On the other hand, I do agree that Novak is not far from Head status. Novak has the advantages of being taller and a better shooter but, like Head, he is extremely one-dimensional. He is a liability in ever aspect of the game other than shooting.
The comparison was made to show that progress isn't always important, it had nothing to do with Duncan the superstar vs. Head/Novak the benchwarmers. Tim Duncan came in the league a polished low post scorer and hasn't really progressessed since then. Head hasn't developed since being drafted but that doesn't mean he shouldn't be in the league. I don't consider Novak's progression an admission of him being better than Head.
Last season, I thought Luther would be our future. However, ever since the 2007 playoffs, it has become plain to me that he is not going to get any better, and his shooting actually got worse. He is definitely a waste of space. And to think, I used to be in love with the guy!
Are you flipping kidding me? If Head had Duncan's skills he would not need to improve much either. But Luther is a good shooter, and NOTHING else...... DD
Bring back that "new NBA ball" and Head will hit at least 50% from the 3 point line again. He was straight up nasty w/ that ball.
He is tiny. He gets pushed around by bigger guys on defense and gets blown past by people who are his size. He can't dribble for crap. He isn't a good passer. He's basically a Smurf who sits outside the 3-point line and makes 3-pointers during the regular season. He's a poodle, not a bulldog, in the playoffs. He has one marketable skill, and it disappears when it counts the most. I don't think we undervalue him--that's his value. I'm sure other teams (the same ones who post him up every time down the court) would agree with that assessment. There's a difference between being undervalued and having low value.
ha.. ha, ha.. haa, aha. aha.. hahaha. haaahhaaahahaha.. ahhahahhahahahhaaaaaa, hahahhahahah, haHA.. HAHAHHAHAHHA, HahaHAHhahHAhHA. AHHAHAHAHHAHAHAH.... Remember when Clyde used to always call Head, "Big-Shot Thinker"?
See I think that Head has definitely shown flashes of being better than what we've seen. I think he deserves maybe half of this year to show that he has some value. If he plays well, we've got a rotation player etc. etc. if he plays poorly, all we can hope is that he shoots well enough to lure some dumb team into giving us something useful for him.
Luther Head does have good quicknes. Its not like he's some slow terd out there. He's probably the 2nd fastest & quickest on the team behind Brooks. But with his limited skills and size, he needs to be Monta Ellis quick to be dependable. Add in his questionable decision making with the ball, and that DARN hesitation pump fake EVERY TIME he receives the ball...and you got an expendable player... Fans undervalue his regular season. 2 DREADFUL postseasons negate that.
I think we might be letting our view of Luther be clouded a bit by his playoff donuts. in the reg season, for the most part, Head can help a team that needs an extra shooter. the problem he has is that he needs more consistent minutes to produce his best. His play is spotty, but when he's on he can really shoot the rock. we forget that sometimes. hopefully he can make good trade bait, for the right team.
I remember all the love for him his rookie year, all the potential. I wonder when traded if he will blossom under another coach/offense and then all the luther lovers will start 100 threads on why we nachbar-ed him
