I know that this board is mostly made up of people who are probaly Anti-Gun, but I just bought my first handgun (A Ruger KP89 9mm) for home protection purposes and was curious if anyone could recommend two things to me. The best place to buy affordable ammo and some good shooting ranges. Like I said, this is my first gun purchase and I'm still a noob at this and would take any pointers (besides get rid of the gun, please ) fellow gun owners might have. Thanks a ton!
Cheapest ammo is at Wal-Mart. Get the 9MM Winchester rounds (Box of 100 target rounds) The best target range that I have been to is Top Gun in Houston.. http://www.topgunrange.com/ The worst range that I have been to is Baileys House of Guns...damn rednecks
My advice: Find some good way to secure your weapon and keep it away from anyone stumbling across it. I own 5 guns: Para Ordnance M1911 in .45ACP Glock G19 (9MM) Winchester 12 Ga. Pump Shotgun Marlin Lever Action .30-30 Remington Semi-automatic .22 Personally, I keep them unloaded with cable locks (except the .22 which won't accept one. There are ways to lock guns up for easier access, though.

Walmart has the cheapest rounds. i frequent American shooting range (outdoor) on Westheimer by GHW Bush park. theres also Top Gun shooting range (indoor) in the Richmond strip area.
While I favor strict gun laws and enforcement, I am not anti-gun. Ottomaton is probably one of the more knowledgable gun owners on the board and may chime in. I own two guns; one short barrel .410 with a pistol grip, and a .12 gauge shotgun. Wal-mart has cheap ammo.
Weslinder & Aeroman, Wow! Quite a nice arsenal you each have. Looks like I have asked the right people (and I was afraid of being grilled, lol). The Top Gun Shooting range is actaully pretty close to me, so I think we will check that out this weekend (The girlfriend owns a Bersa Thunder 380 that she inherited from her Mother). I am open to trying any shooting range that doesnt have someone all up in your business the entire time. Im all about safety, but this will be my first time shooiting and dont want to feel like Im being judged. Because, obviously, I will surely suck this first time out, lol. And Weslinder, It came with a lock that you insert when the slide is open and the clip is removed. I also have a lockbox I am going to put it in in the master closet. I dont have any kids and dont like to broadcast to friends and family that I have one, so I think I will be pretty safe. Especially since the girlfriend has had her gun for over a year and is more knowledgeable about them than I am. Thanks for all the suggestions and tips guys.
It might be a good idea to take a lesson. I didn't, and had a lot of bad habits that I had to break. Shooting is fun. Learn how and be safe, but enjoy yourself. You'll like it.
Top Gun range is my favorite. Its indoor and very nice. Nobody is standing over you there, you are on your own (they do have cameras though so don't do anything stupid ). If I remember correctly it is about $15 per person and it a little bit cheaper if you buy ammo from them but I would not do that.. By the way...I am trying to get rid of a box of 100 Remington 380 Auto 88gr rounds (there are 95 left). Apparently these bullets do not work with Ruger LCP...they just jam up and its a known issue. If anyone wants them for half price let me know
As mentioned previously, Walmart is a good place for target ammo. I just bought 100 ct boxes of .45 for $30, .40 for $26, and 9MM for $19. Also, sometimes Gun Shows will have good deals. The last one at GRB I bought 100 ct boxes of .45 for $24. Top Gun is a good place to go or target shooting, no one is really in your face, as it's never crowded when I've gone. Another one I go to is Memorial Oaks shooting center. It's not as nice and sophisticated as Top Gun, but it's close, cheap, and for me at least, a range is a range. Guns are awesome. I also have two katanas, a U.S. Army officer's saber, and a bunch of knives. Throwing knives are fun.

I recommend getting a safe of some sort for ammo storage. I personally have one of those fireproof safes where I lock up my ammo. IMO, too often do people have gun locks but then just have boxes of ammo piled in their closet. Antis will look for any excuse to deny us our rights so I attempt to minimize the risk of accidents at all times.
Consider getting a CHL..........even if you never plan to carry it with you. They reinforce some good safety lessons........although the course (like most non-prerequisite programs) can be dumbed down to the lowest common denominator. If you have any little ones around the house—or if you think you might EVER have a little one visit the house--consider some type of safety device. A trigger lock will work, but if you store the key elsewhere (and if you don’t, what is the use?), you can’t really get to it quickly, so it defeats the purpose of having the sidearm for self protection. There are several small gun safes that are designed to store little more than just a pistol, and they have user programmable button locks for quick access. In fact, I saw some Winchester branded ones the other day at overstock.com, and they were around a hundred bucks. This would keep small hands and eyes off your gun while providing quick access.
Please don't put your ammo in your firesafe. Firemen will not like you. Gun powder in an airtight fire safe can become a bomb in the event of a fire. Most fire safes are only protected with a thin layer of sheetrock, and if the fire is hot enough or lasts long enough, it can set off your ammo. In the confines of a fire safe, it goes boom! A cheap "Stack on" brand locker works better for ammo.
Depends on the range. Top Gun and many other ones offer the CHL class. If you are in Pearland or surrounding area I highly recommend taking it at Cop Stop.
