I was just wondering... if we draft Serge Ibaka, will he come over to the US this year or will he finish playing overseas and come to Rockets 2-3 years later?
That would be up to the NBA team and the player/his representation. Usually they arrive at a mutual agreement a la the Spurs where a late pick agrees that he needs more seasoning in the Euroleagues and goes there on his own volition. In that case, when the team deems that player ready to come to their roster, they will make that player a contract offer, usually including paying the buyout on their European contract if they are not free agents by that time. If the player does not improve sufficiently, they just won't offer a contract and that player will stay in Europe or wherever he can get a roster spot. I'm not sure about this, but apparently if they have not offered a second round pick a contract three years after drafting him they lose his rights. On the other hand, if a player is drafted in the first round and wants to play for the team that drafted him I think he is guaranteed a two-year contract with team options for years 3 and 4. If even after that the team cuts him in training camp, that player will have his two years of guaranteed money and then become a FA, but I can't remember the last time a first round pick got cut before his first season even started.
