    NBA FINALS NOTES
Cassell looks back at championships with Rockets

    By JONATHAN FEIGEN
    Copyright 2008 Houston Chronicle

Celtics guard Sam Cassell had not been to the Finals since he was a Rockets teammate of Hakeem Olajuwon. He said he is back because he has a star big man again, but he said that is one of few similarities between Olajuwon and Kevin Garnett.

"Totally different ballplayers," Cassell said. "Dream was power with a drop of finesse. Kevin is totally finesse. Kevin is not going to overpower you. Hakeem Olajuwon is going to overpower you and drop a little finesse on you, the best of both worlds."

Garnett has not had an Olajuwon-like Finals, averaging 16.6 points on 40.2 percent shooting in the first five games. He is, however, one of the few players who uses a vintage Dream Shake.

With the subject of Olajuwon coming up, Cassell was asked about the Finals meeting with the Rockets and Bulls that never was.

"They had Michael Jordan, but we had Hakeem Olajuwon," Cassell said. "We didn't have anyone to stop Michael Jordan, but they didn't have anyone to stop Hakeem Olajuwon. We might have (won), but it would have been fun to play them. (Vernon Maxwell) was the guy that was feisty enough. You're not going to stop Michael Jordan, but he could contain him. He used to have good games against Michael Jordan. And we still had the big fella in the paint to dominate."

Hakeem dominated. KG is a jump shooter. I think that's what Sam means

Didn't you post a previous article similiar to this before? I'm just curious but nonetheless we had an awesome team, and it's always great to hear good things about them!

Its hard to believe that this may have been the last season that anyone from those back-to-back teams is still playing.

    Horry, possible retirement
    Cassell, Possible retirement.

this article came out today. fresh from the popper.

Sam basically gives his voice on KG vs Dream
and the Dream Rockets vs Jordan Bulls.

    Basically telling the truth.

Cassell could also throw in that even if Maxwell had an off game or got in foul trouble; Mario would have come off the bench to guard MJ. A full series of Madmax and Junk Yard Dog on his a$$, that would have been MJ's worst nightmare. To think, even if MJ gets past one of them, Thorpe and Dream would be waiting in the paint! Where's Pip? A young Horry is all over him too. After bashing with Buck, Sir Charles and Mailman; Thorpe would have dominated Grant. I think Smith/Cassell would have equaled Paxson/Armstrong.
ESPN needs to make a Top 5 Reasons the Rockets would have still won even if Jordan didn't retire. I could give way more than 5!

this is what is great about winning a championship or back to back championships, its FOREVER. its in your heart and your mind.

yeah, its June 2008, Sam got another ring and still looks back at those days as legendary.

hell, he should have said if you put Garnett, Odom, and Gasol on one team, Dream would still drop 30 points and 15 boards and 5 blocks and 7 assists on them. oh.. and about 3 steals too.

Well, here's what he did to McHale, Parrish, and Bird...

    1986 Finals: 24.6 ppg, 11.8 rpg, 3.1 bpg, 2.3 spg, 2 apg.

tinman, this thread is gold to me (many of yours are), but this should save me from a perennial off-season rant about guys' posts here that should know better. Dream was never a "finesse" center!!!

seems as though every player that has played for hakeem talks about him in a certain awe ... as though no other player can even come close to emulating his greatness.

horry and cassell both spoke of hakeem like this in comparing kg vs dream and shaq vs dream.

oh ... hmm i just remembered cassell played with kg in minnesota heh. that's where the other article i think i read of cassell talking about the comparison came from.

There are 2 other ex-Rockets which are unsung heros in this Celtics team, contributing more to Celtics championship than Sam Cassell.

James Posey.......great series. Gave Celtics offense sparks from the bench with his deadly 3-pointers. And not to mention his hard nosed defense all throughout.

And of course, the great Tom Thibodeau who had almost single-handedly turned the offensive Celtics into one of the toughest defensive teams in the league.

If only Rick Adelman had retained Tom !!

We can totally use James Posey on this team.
